On November 28, 2023, during an interview with The Direct, Kamala Khan voice actress Iman Vellani revealed that voice work for her character had been completed. She also revealed that Kamala would be central to the series, likening her role to that of Frodo in The Lord of the Rings.[1]
Powers and abilities
Powers
- Noor Manipulation: As a Djinn-Human hybrid, Kamala has Noor present within her, which she can control. Noor is the energy source of the Noor Dimension. Djinns possess the ability to control it, but their powers are subdued outside of their home Dimension. Kamala's humanity links her to the matter of Earth, and her mixed ancestry, combined with a mutation in her genetics, allow her to use Noor to its full potential, by drawing the dimension's energy onto Earth.
- Bioluminescence: Kamala's powers emit a purple light, while being used. The light generated, is dependent on the size of the construct that Kamala produces.
- Constructs Creation: The ability to project and control energy constructs, which can be produced through her hands.
Equipment
- Quantum Band: Kamala possesses a bangle, which was passed onto her, by her grandmother, Sana. The bangle was responsible for unlocking her latent abilities and giving Kamala the means to survive the world, following the zombie outbreak.
Early life
Kamala Khan is the daughter to Pakistani immigrants, Muneeba and Yusuf Khan, and the younger sister of Aamir Khan. One day, she is sent a mystical bangle by her grandmother, which unlocks latent powers within her, granting Kamala the ability to turn energy into solid matter.[2]
When Janet Van Dyne is plagued by a quantum virus, it spreads across the globe, turning the majority of Earth's inhabitants, including the Avengers, into zombies. Kamala is amongst the few survivors. She eventually crosses paths with Kate Bishop, an archer who models herself after Hawkeye, and Riri Williams, a genius, who managed to take hold of one of Iron Man's armored suits, programmed by his A.I., F.R.I.D.A.Y. She joins the two and they find safe haven in Kate's mansion.[2]
Role in the series
Kamala, Kate and Riri make their way across the ruins of a New York City, which has been left in complete abandonment. The trio scavenge and Kamala comes across a can of tomato soup, when they see a Quinjet fly across the horizon and crash-land in their vicinity. Kamala uses her powers to rip it open and they find a deceased passenger by the cockpit. Riri's goggles detect something within his stomach, after much debating, Kamala is chosen to tear it from within him. Kamala pulls out a small device, but as she does so, the passenger, now a zombie, lunges at her, but finds himself to be restrained by his seatbelt and Kamala's shield.[2]
Outside, an arrow strikes F.R.I.D.A.Y., and the three learn they have been discovered by a zombified Hawkeye. Kamala uses her powers to carry the Iron Man armor, and as they run off, she blocks another arrow, which Kate takes possession of.[2]
They retreat back to Kate's mansion and prepare dinner. As Kamala prepares the tomato soup, she and Kate reminisce over their family's intuitions that ultimately prepared them for the outbreak, as she recalls her grandmother sending her the bangle. Riri concludes that the device they discovered is a transmitter, which is part of a larger program called Project Lifeshoot, which may hold the key to help save the world. They need to head towards a S.H.I.E.L.D. base to further decrypt the message, and they discover a location in Ohio, which may hold the tools in helping them do so. After some contemplation, they leave their sanctuary and prepare for supplies. Before she goes, Kamala looks upon a photograph of her family, and the trio head off.[2]
The girls play 'I spy' to pass the time, when they're suddenly brought to a halt. They find an obliterated mountain range, missing the middle chunk of it and drive through, continuing on their journey. The weather changes as a storm gathers and Kamala briefly reminisces about feeling safe and being in her bedroom, when she notes that the clouds above are travelling at an abnormal speed. Riri speeds up, and a force attempts to blast them from the sky, continuously shooting in their direction, until striking them. The SUV topples over, but Kamala creates a shield from within, keeping them from further harm. They crawl out and run to take cover as more blasts are thrown in their direction. They hide, but the girls suddenly find themselves at the centre of a horde of zombies, and attempt to fight off as many as they can, when they're confronted by a feral Ikaris who descends from the sky, and tackles a zombified Captain Marvel. Whilst the former hero is momentarily subdued, she returns her focus on the trio, and incinerates Kate. Horrified after witnessing the death of her friend, Kamala creates platforms in Captain Marvel's direction, ready for a confrontation, blasting her with projectiles. A shot is fired by Ikaris in Kamala and Captain Marvel's direction, sending Kamala crashing down. She continues fighting the zombies at ground level, when F.R.I.D.A.Y. takes hold of her, and jets away, leaving Riri to the zombies. Kamala begs F.R.I.D.A.Y. to return her to her remaining friend, but the A.I. has been ordered not to do so, and hands Kamala the transmitter to deliver to Ohio, whilst the programme returns back to its owner.[2]
Kamala flees from Captain Marvel's attacks, whilst the undead Avenger continues in her battle against Ikaris. Kamala is knocked back, and someone on a motorcycle approaches her direction and takes hold of her, as she loses consciousness.[2]
Kamala finds herself in a city street during the day. There are no signs of the zombie apocalypse taking place, and she finds her two friends sitting by a table, heads down. The two lift their head, and point towards Kamala, who briefly breaks free from the illusion and turns to find a figure, behind her, before waking up from her nightmare.[2]
Kamala comes to, besides a campfire, with her rescuer, who introduces himself as Blade, and informs her, he'll escort her to Ohio with the transmitter. Blade reveals to Kamala that he is possessed by the knowledgeable deity Khonshu, who lost his former avatar in the zombie plague, and now acts through him.[2]
The two reach their destiny, and find the base surrounded by group of zombies huddled together, yet immobile. They make their way through the crowd to discover Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, and Melina Vostokoff, who developed a neurological agent to control the zombies. Kamala reveals the transmitter, and informs the agents she's in need of a S.H.I.E.L.D. motherboard to decrypt the device. Melina is able to infer that it can contact the Nova Corps, an intergalactic authority, who may have the technology to heal the world. However, the fallout from the downfall of Wakanda has scattered signals on Earth, and the only way they can broadcast the transmitter is from outside the atmosphere, in space.[2]
At that moment, the emergency sirens activate and Blade reveals that the |Queen of the Dead, Wanda Maximoff, has discovered their whereabouts. A horde of zombies appear outside the base. Kamala, Yelena, Red Guardian and Blade manage to escape through a passage, whilst Melina stays back to give them more time. Kamala briefly comes into contact with a zombie that possesses the ability to phase through solid matter, but Blade saves her in time, slaughtering the creature with his sword.[2]
The group make their way onto garage full of vehicles, and Kamala climbs onto the back of Blade's motorcycle, whilst throwing projectiles at a zombified Abomination who chases after them. They exit through a hatch, whilst the former base is destroyed, leaving everyone inside to be engulfed in the flames.[2]
Yelena and Red Guardian grieve the loss of Melina, and promise to honor her by helping Kamala complete her mission and take the transmitter to space. Kamala thanks them, and Blade informs the group he knows where to find a ship.[2]
The group settle into an encampment headed by Baron Zemo. He is head of the City on the Sea, a former prison in an underwater vessel, known as the Raft, which has now been converted into a retreat, and offers others refuge in exchange for a tribute. Blade learns that the submarine is heading towards New Asgard, where a spacecraft is being held that will allow them to complete their mission.[3]
A new group of refugees make their way into Zemo's encampment, and Red Guardian mistakenly alerts the occupants of a zombie amongst them, after seeing Shang-Chi's mummified arm. Kamala activates her hard light, ready to battle, but stops in her midst, at the arrival of the Baron. Zemo voices his mistrust for heroes, but grants them all access to his vessel. They settle in, and the two parties dine. They bond, and Kamala briefs her new friends of their shared mission in getting the transmitter into space.[3]
Later on in the evening, Kamala falls asleep. She dreams of a figure kneeling before her, and turns around to see Wanda Maximoff. She awakens from the nightmare and Blade informs her that Kamala has become subject to the Dead Queen's attention. Kamala nervously questions what she saw, reluctantly attempting to dismiss it as a dream, when their vessel is suddenly met by a force.[3]
Kamala and her roommates find their chambers to be locked by prison bars, and Zemo appears before them, informing the group that they learnt that the only way to stop him is if he is fed. He orders their ejection, and Kamala creates a shield around the heroes, as they're submerged into the ocean and expelled from the former prison. A figure charges in their direction, pushing Kamala's shield against the City on the Sea and breaking through. A secondary reinforced wall closes the newly created hole, preventing the vessel from sinking in, under the pressures of the water, but it has also given access to Namor, the being Zemo referred to. A containment cell is activated from the ground, but he manages to escape and his fellow underwater dwellers also break through, resulting in a battle breaking out. The former safe haven's walls begin to shatter, as the compound's security becomes compromised, and begin to flood. Kamala and the remaining survivors head towards an escape pod, which has been locked off by Zemo, and find themselves confronted by Namor. Kamala throws a shield against the zombie, but his brute strength pushes past her powers, and they break onto the other side of the wall. The heroes attack Namor, but he proves himself to be stronger. Whilst on the verge of killing Red Guardian, Kamala's distracts him with the transmitter, catching his attention and he takes hold of her crystallised hand through his sharp teeth. Shang-Chi, Katy and Red Guardian assist Kamala and attempt to keep him back, but Kamala manages to manipulate her hard light into an enlarged morning star, which bursts through his head, disabling Namor once and for all.[3]
The remaining survivors, Kamala, Red Guardian, Shang-Chi, Jimmy Woo, Katy, Blade, Death Dealer and Zemo head into the escape pod. Yelena clears them to leave, but in doing do, reveals she can't join them, having already made peace with her impending death. She activates the pod, and the group sail away. Kamala comforts Alexei, as he grieves his daughter, whilst they make their way into New Asgard.[3]
The escape pod makes its way onto the surface and the group head out. Kamala finds a distraught Alexei, and encourages him to honor Yelena, by continuing their mission.[4]
They make their way to a giant door, carved into a mountain that holds New Asgard on the other side. They are met by Valkyrie, who turns them away, but Kamala pleads with her to grant them entry. Valkyrie once again requests they leave or face her wrath, as New Asgard’s refuge is designated for the Gods. Blade in turn, reveals Khonshu to Valkyire which allows them access.[4]
As they make their way through the grand entrance hall, they inquire about a ship, which Kamala shares may give them the means of healing the infected on Earth. Valkyrie is dismissive, as she and her fellow Asgardians live in comfort and escape the struggles of the outside world. They make their way into a banquet, where Valkyrie's fellow Gods consort, eat and drink to their hearts content and live with relative ease. Kamala attempts to make her way to a sullen Thor, who is sitting alone, but Valkyrie blocks her path as he doesn't talk to anyone. Kamala, in turn, informs Valkyrie of the transmitter's capabilities, and why they need to get it into space, but Valkyrie points out how broken the hero has become over the years.[4]
She notifies the group they have been provided for by the Queen of Sokovia, revealed to be Wanda Maximoff. The heroes ready for a fight, but the Asgardians draw their weapons in response. Kamala confronts her, and Wanda reveals that she was infected, but over time, regained her reality-warping abilities and healed herself. She also adds that she held the power to heal the world, as the energies of the Infinity Stones were released in Wakanda, only to be stolen and hoarded. Wanda divulges her plans to recruit a God-like army, and apologises, as she reveals that the food the Asgardians feasted upon, is nothing more than an illusion, reverting to its original state of zombie remains, infecting all those who dined on it, and creating a horde of zombified Asgardians. Kamala is horrified at this discovery, and Wanda's offer to join her. Wanda’s face returns to its zombified state, and Kamala throws her back with a shield. The heroes battle the Asgardians, and Kamala blocks an attempt to infect Thor, which gets his attention. Amidst the chaos, Zemo, Jimmy Woo and Death Dealer lose their lives.[4]
They make a run for the spacecraft and the Asgardians chase after them. Kamala supports Alexei who appears to be injured, and he falls to the ground. Kamala tries to help him recover, but the Red Guardian transforms into a zombie before her eyes. She apologizes to him and promises to honor the fallen warrior, before pushing him into the group of other zombies, and climbing abroad the spacecraft. They take off, but Wanda begins pulling them back. Before she can capture the remaining heroes, the God of Thunder intervenes, attacking the Queen of the Dead. Kamala cheers on, as Thor engages in battle, and he urges them to leave. Kamala questions his stance as the last Avenger, but Thor grants her the status instead, as he once again, commands them to escape, whilst he continues in combat.[4]
They make their way above the atmosphere and Kamala hands Valkyrie the transmitter, which she key synchs to the comms of the ship. Shang-Chi congratulates Kamala for the effort she put into enacting her mission, and the young heroine finally activates the device. They are immediately met by the Nova Corps, who were already aware of Earth's status and left them to be condemned to their fate. The space organisation warns the group that any attempt to flee the planet will be met by incineration, and a countdown begins.[4]
Valkyrie takes off, whilst the Nova Corps tail them. Their blasts damage the ship, and Kamala uses her hard light to block the newly formed punctures. The Nova Corps destroy the ship, and Kamala generates a force field around them, as they hurdle back onto Earth. The pressure eventually shatters Kamala's constructs, and heroes begin plunging towards the sea. Before they can fall in, they each fall through a portal.[5]
Kamala come to, and is greeted by Spider-Man. Kamala is enraptured upon meeting the web slinger and is also greeted by Scott Lang now living as a floating head, balanced upon a floating cloak. Rintrah, a minotaur, welcomes them to Kamar Taj. The heroes learn that after the Infinity Stones were destroyed, their energies were released into the atmosphere, destroying everything in its path, until they were contained by the Hulk, transforming him into an anchor, protecting energies that could make or destroy worlds and protecting them from the Queen of the Dead who has finally formed an army, strong enough to battle him. Rintrah asks the hero to ride into combat with them for the fate of the planet.[5]
As Kamala takes time to make a decision, she ruminates over the loss of friends. Shang-Chi reminds Kamala of the hope she instilled in all of them. She hugs him and the group reform, ready to battle, together again.[5]
The newly formed team, composed of Kamala, Scott Lang, Spider-Man, Valkyrie, Katy, Shang-Chi, Rintrah, Sara and the London Master, join Hulk on the battlefield against Wanda and her army. The Red Queen greets Kamala, and she in turn creates constructs on her arms, ready to fight. Rintrah informs the group they can't let the witch touch Banner.[5]
The heroes charge and Kamala creates a hard light construct in front of the group, slicing the limbs off the zombies who come into contact with it. She creates a hard light exoskeleton, protecting her from the zombies attack, as she fights on. When Wasp comes into the vicinity of Hulk, Kamala creates an embiggened fist, punching her back. The Wasp attempts to counter her, but is blocked by Valkyrie who placates her. At that moment Wanda whispers to Kamala, urging her stop or have her friends deaths be for nought. She reaches her hand out, but Kamala emits a powerful blast that briefly pushes Wanda back. Wanda, in retaliation, brings forth all the friends Kamala lost, now in their zombified state. Kamala creates a shield as Alexei, Riri and Yelena attack her. A battle ensues between Hulk and zombie Thor, resulting in the God of Thunder's defeat, and creates a powerful blasts that sends the zombies surrounding Kamala to fly back. Kamala looks upon Hulk and smiles at him for a brief moment, before Wanda suddenly materialises and makes contact with Banner. Kamala tries intervening, but her strikes prove useless against the Queen of Dead, who was aware their fates would cross paths. Wanda once again offers Kamala a place by her side, and the chance to bring back everyone she lost, and offers her hand. Having completely lost all hope, Kamala joins hands with the witch, and she shares the energies contained within the Hulk. The power courses through herself and Wanda, as a force emanates across the globe.[5]
Kamala wakes up in her room to the sound of her mother, alerting her, that her friends have arrived. She opens the door for Riri and Kate, and tightly embraces the two. The trio get boba, and Kamala speaks with great excitement in planning their everyday tasks, much to the other two's confusion. Kamala spots a handsome guy and points her friends in his direction, and as she does, her vision momentarily reverts to the zombie apocalypse she thought she escaped, before quickly reverting back. She looks around and it happens once again, and she briefly hears the calls of Riri, in the zombie world, asking if she can hear her. Riri tries informing her friend that the world she sees is fake, but her message cuts off, and Kamala returns back to the pre-apocalpytic world. Kamala looks in horror upon Kate and Riri who stare at her intently and ask if she's good.[5]
