Kang the Conqueror is a Marvel Comics character who appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, first appearing in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Two Variants of Kang appear in the Loki series: He Who Remains and Victor Timely.
Kang was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.

In the 31st century, a Variant of Kang was a scientist on Earth. He discovered alternate universes, at the same time that other of his Variants did the same, causing the Kang Variants to meet. They shared knowledge and technology, using what they learned from each other to improve the other universes.
For a while, there was peace, but some of these Variants viewed the universes discovered as new lands to be conquered. This led to the Variants fighting each other for the supremacy of their own universes and trying to eliminate the others in a Multiversal War. The war almost caused the destruction of everything in the multiverse, until one of these Variants found Alioth, a creature formed out of all the tears in reality that is able to consume time and space itself. Another Variant, who later became known as He Who Remains, managed to weaponize Alioth's power and use it to end the war.
Following the end of the Multiversal War, He Who Remains isolated a collection of realities, reorganizing it into a single "Sacred Timeline". He Who Remains also created the Time Variance Authority to protect the proper flow of time by pruning branched timelines and Variants, to assure that the Kang Variants would not be able to dominate the Multiverse and start another Multiversal War.

Season One[]

In the final episode of the season, Loki and Sylvie arrive at the Citadel at the End of Time and meet the Variant of Kang who rules the Time Variance Authority, He Who Remains. He tells the two Lokis the story behind the Multiversal War and the creation of the TVA, explaining that the war caused by the Kang Variants almost led to the destruction of all realities of the Multiverse. The war ended after he weaponized Alioth and eliminated his other Variants, before organizing the Sacred Timeline and creating the TVA, leading the Multiverse to ages of cosmic harmony.
He Who Remains tells Loki and Sylvie about the Multiversal War caused by the Kang Variants.
He Who Remains warns Loki and Sylvie that he is not as evil as the other of his Variants, and that something even worse will take his place if they decide to kill him. He then gives the duo two options: kill him which will unleash an infinite amount of his Variants in the Multiverse, or assume his place as the new rulers of the TVA.
Loki believes in He Who Remains' story. Sylvie, however, is still set on taking revenge on He Who Remains because the TVA destroyed her timeline. She also thinks that everything that the ruler of the TVA told them is just a lie. This leads the couple to a disagreement. While Sylvie wants to kill He Who Remains, Loki wants to rethink their plan to avoid unleashing something worse in the Multiverse. This results in Sylvie using He Who Remains' TemPad to send Loki back to the TVA, before finally completing her mission by murdering the ruler of the TVA. With the death of He Who Remains, the Sacred Timeline is freed and branches off several times.
At the TVA, after crying for failing to stop Sylvie, Loki decides to warn the others about the Multiversal War. Inside the Archives, Loki finds Hunter B-15 and Agent Mobius checking the great number of new branched timelines on a TemPad. As the two of them evaluate the damage and realize that they will not be able to prune all these timelines, B-15 wonders if "he" wants them to just let everything branch. Loki tells them that they won't be able to stop the branches, then reveals that he and Sylvie found He Who Remains and freed the timeline. Loki tries to explain that there are countless versions of the same dangerous person coming and they will start a war. To Loki's surprise, neither Mobius nor B-15 recognize him. Looking around, Loki sees that there is a statue of He Who Remains replacing the statues of the Time Keepers, the ones the TVA members believe to be the founders and rulers of the TVA.
Season Two[]
In the first episode of the second season, Loki finds out he was sent to the TVA in the past as result of time slipping. This is the reason why nobody in the organization recognizes him and also the reason why structures with the image of He Who Remains are seen, as the TVA members were still aware about who their true ruler was at that point in time, but they later had their memories erased. Slipping to the TVA in the present time, Loki rushes to reveal the true identity of the creator of the organization to the TVA members inside the War Room and warn them that Variants of this person are coming back. He later tells Mobius more details about what happened at the Citadel at the End of Time and warns about the war that is coming now that the Sacred Timeline is branching off, which will lead to the return of the Kang Variants. While Loki talks to Mobius, a mural depicting the Multiversal War with the Kang Variants fighting each other is seen next to them.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania[]
Kang appears in this movie as the main antagonist. Scott, Hope and Hank learn that her mother Janet spent 30 years in the Quantum Realm with a Variant of Kang who traveled the Multiverse causing war and destruction.
Years later, after taking Darren Cross under his wing, Kang had ordered the capture of Ant-Man and Cassie Lang, holding the latter prisoner unless Ant-Man would succeed in claiming the Multiversal Engine Core to escape the Realm with his new empire and enact a new dynasty. However, Kang's attempts were thwarted by a revolution by the Freedom Fighters. In his last opportunity to escape, he had a brutal duel against Ant-Man, which resulted in Kang being shrunken and decimated by his own Engine Core, though his death inadvertently alerted the Council of Kangs about people interacting with the Multiverse, prompting them to take their own measures.

The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes[]
Kang finds out his timeline is being erased, so he travels with his troops in the Damocles base to the present day to destroy Captain America, who seems to be the cause by surviving his apparent death in World War Two. Right before the time jump, Kang's wife (Ravonna) is trapped by the erasing effect but saved by Kang, which leaves her in an intermediate existence state.
Kang faces the Avengers, who refuse to turn Cap to him. After a fight, he returns to Damocles and sends an invasion force to take Earth. The Avengers defeat part of this force ant then find Damocles, where they face and defeat Kang, who is defeated and jailed. Henry Pym and Reed Richards take care of Ravonna to find a way to save her.
Time later, Kang remained imprisoned at 42. As the Avengers were becoming a problem in different timelines, the Council of Kangs decided to release him with the purpose that he remove the Avengers from the timeline. After having escaped, Kang went to Stark Industries to use the arc reactor against the Avengers. Before disappearing, Iron Man asks Jarvis execute the program New Avengers. Later, Kang faced with the New Avengers. Eventually, he was defeated by the New Avengers, transported to another timeline and meets his final defeat for good.
Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.[]
When Hulk and Rick Jones see the Negative Zone portal, Rick mentions Kang as one of the villains who could have caused it.
Avengers Assemble: Ultron Revolution[]
When Iron Man accidentally ends up in Kang's time, Iron Man had a brief struggle with Kang before they end up back in the Avengers' time. Kang finds that A.I.M. has been harvesting his technology and takes control of the A.I.M. Agents present before disappearing. Kang later returned with his ship Damocles as the Avengers worked to prevent Damocles from firing a mega cannon that would annihilate Manhattan. Although the Avengers disable the cannon, Kang takes Damocles back to the 30th Century alongside most of the Avengers. The Avengers meet an elderly Thor, a future Black Widow, and several rebels who help fight Kang and his Kang bots. When Kang plans to use his device to travel to other worlds, Captain America grabs onto him as they both end up in World War II and then the Jurassic Period where their fight is interrupted by an Allosaurus. Afterwards, Captain America takes the time-travel device, leaving Kang stranded in the Jurassic Period. While angered that he was thwarted by the Avengers, Kang states that this setback will give him time to prepare.

- In the comics, Kang and He Who Remains are separate characters.
- In the comics, Nathaniel Richards, also known as Kang the Conqueror, is a time traveling enemy of both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four and is the ruler of Chronopolis.
- Kang's actor, Jonathan Majors, was found guilty of assault, which resulted in him being fired from Marvel Studios.[1][2] This led to the Council of Kangs being scrapped, and the villain of the Avengers two-parter (Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars) will be Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr. The original title of Doomsday, The Kang Dynasty, was changed to reflect this.
