Kate Elizabeth Winslet, CBE, is an English actress, voice actress, and singer. She is perhaps best known for her film roles as Marianne Dashwood in the 1995 period drama film Sense and Sensibility and Rose DeWitt Bukater in the 1997 biographical disaster film Titanic. She also voiced Rita Malone in the 2006 DreamWorks/Aardman animated film Flushed Away.
For Disney, she voiced the titular character of Black Beauty. She also played Princess Sarah in A Kid in King Arthur's Court, Sylvia Llewelyn Davies in the 2004 Miramax film Finding Neverland, and Ronal in the 2022 20th Century Studios film Avatar: The Way of Water and its 2025 sequel Avatar 3.
Winslet was born in Reading, Berkshire to parents Sally Ann (née Bridges) and Roger John Winslet. She is primarily of British descent, but also has Irish ancestry on her father's side and Swedish ancestry on her mother's side. Her mother worked as a nanny and waitress, and her father, a struggling actor, took laboring jobs to support the family. Her maternal grandparents were both actors and ran the Reading Repertory Theatre Company. When Winslet was ten, her father severely injured his foot in a boating accident and found it harder to work, leading to more financial hardships for the family. Winslet has said her parents always made them feel cared for and that they were a supportive family.
