"Kids in the Mist" is the second segment of the twelfth episode of Recess.

Synopsis[]

A researcher named Dr. Quilty wants to research by video about recess. When she first tries it, she fails, and T.J. and the gang decide to help her out. How will it turn out?

Cast[]

Dr. Quilty a "child expert" is sent to Third Street School to do a documentary on children and their behavior. Principal Prickly is ambivalent on the idea, but after learning that Superintendent Skinner was the one who sent her, he agrees to letting her due her research at the school. Quilty tries to get close to the children, but it quickly becomes apparent that she has no social skills with them and that her "disguises" are not fooling anyone. After a series of major setbacks, her camera crew leave her. The Recess Gang take pity on her and agree to help film her documentary for the Superintendent.

The filming comes out great, but when the Gang ask when they can see the finished product, Quilty tells them that it would be November of next year. After she leaves, the Gang break into her editing room, which is actually just the janitor's closet, and watch the half-finished product. To their shock, the documentary devalues recess and belittles the kids while also including Prickly saying they would be better off without recess. Feeling betrayed, the Gang decide that since they have access to the room, they will fix the documentary before the Superintendent comes to see it and head out to film new footage while Gretchen puts the finishing touches on it.

They finally manage to finish editing the film and hide when Quilty, Prickly, the Superintendent and expert Dr. Fitzenberg come to see the film. The movie ends up reediting the footage to come off more comical and even makes Prickly look like a fool by replacing his dialogue with pig snorts, much to Quilty's horror. The film ends with the Gang explaining why recess is important to them and that they should consider extending it. While Quilty and Prickly are angered by the footage, the Superintendent is delighted by it while Dr. Fitzenberg congratulates Quilty by extending her work with children. While the Gang congratulate themselves, Quilty tries to shoot footage of the Kindergartners, only to get captured by them.
