"Kiff Loses Barry" is the second segment of the sixtieth episode, as well as the season two finale[1] of the Disney Channel animated series Kiff.
Synopsis[]
Kiff and Barry get separated while on a road trip.
Plot[]
Kiff, Barry, Beryl, and Martin head off on their road trip to Old Punctual. Barry receives last-minute safety reminders from Mary over the phone until he has to hang up because they are entering the desert, which has no cellphone service. On the drive through the desert, Martin recounts his childhood trip to Old Punctual, during which he came up with an unsuccessful plan to toss a keychain bearing his name into the geyser, so that when the geyser erupted and spouted out the keychain, everyone would see Martin's name on it. Caught up in his reverie, he nearly misses the turn heading to Old Punctual.
Upon arriving at Old Punctual, Martin secretly takes out his old "Lil' Marty" keychain, which he still has in his possession. Just as he is about to finally execute his childhood plan, Martin sees a "Keep Our Geyser Clean" sign and has a last-second change of heart. However, a member of a visiting band named the Shoeshiners accidentally hits Martin with her fiddle, causing him to drop the keychain into the geyser anyway. The keychain clogs the geyser's opening, causing water to violently erupt out of random spots in the ground. As everyone around him flees, Barry is unable to see anything because his vision is blocked by a mosquito net hat that Mary made him wear. Kiff braves through the chaos to rescue Barry. On the drive back, Martin, stressed out by the situation he caused, orders everyone in the car to stay silent for an hour.
One hour later, Kiff is relieved to finally be able to talk to Barry, only to take "his" hat off and discover that a similar-looking stranger has been in the car the entire time. Realizing that she lost Barry at the geyser, Kiff lets out a horrified scream. Meanwhile, Barry takes off his hat and finds himself in the Shoeshiners' tour bus. Confused, he interrupts their jam session to explain his situation. When Barry mentions that he was supposed to spend the night at the Rocking Chair Falls Motel with the Chatterleys, the Shoeshiners' leader Jeffy informs Barry that they will actually be passing the motel on their way to a gig in Rocking Chair Falls that night. Jeffy introduces Barry to her band, a modestly popular country-folk group still looking for their big break, and lets Barry tag along with them to Rocking Chair Falls.
Back in the Chatterleys' car, the stranger introduces herself as Jerry Jo and says she would have clarified the mix-up sooner had Martin not ordered everyone to stay silent. The car returns to Old Punctual, where the situation is now under control. Kiff asks the park ranger onsite if he has seen Barry, but he does not recognize Barry from Kiff's description. The ranger then inquires if the Chatterleys might have any information about the identity of a "Lil' Marty" whose keychain was found near the geyser, prompting Martin to leave in a hurry. Before they leave, however, the ranger sees Jerry Jo's hat and tells them that he saw someone in a similar hat boarding a big red bus. Jerry Jo recognizes the vehicle as the Shoeshiners' tour bus, as she is the band's roadie. Though she cannot recall the exact location where they will be playing that night, she is able to tell the Chatterleys the general direction the bus had been traveling in.
Traveling separately through the desert, Kiff and Barry sing a sad but hopeful song, assuring themselves that despite the distance between them, they will somehow find each other. During her journey in search of Barry, Kiff finds various hints of his whereabouts – a paper airplane he threw out his bus' window, his footprint on an oil stain left by the bus during an oil change, and his picture on the wall of photos at the World's Third Biggest Boot. Her tracking eventually leads the car to the Rocking Chair Falls Motel.
At the motel, Kiff speaks with the receptionist, who informs her that a member of the Chatterley party has already checked in. Kiff quickly rushes up to their room, while Barry is seen waiting on a couch. However, Kiff ends up finding Jerry Jo, who had checked into the room for the Chatterleys while Kiff searched the motel lobby for Barry earlier. Barry is revealed to actually be in the Shoeshiners' dressing room at their gig, where the stage manager informs the band that they are on in two minutes. The Shoeshiners console Barry, who is sad that Kiff has not found him, and invite him to perform with them.
As Beryl and Martin console Kiff, who is disappointed in herself for failing to find Barry, the sound of music suddenly fills the air. Following the music, Jerry Jo and Kiff find the Shoeshiners playing at a barn just behind the motel. While trying to make her way through the audience, Kiff is picked up and crowdsurfed to the front row. Disoriented, Kiff nearly ends up being lost in the crowd again, but Barry spots her and pulls her onstage. As the reunited friends share an emotional embrace, Jeffy introduces Barry to the audience and hands him a microphone so he can perform the song he sang in the bus earlier. Backed by the Shoeshiners, Barry and Kiff sing a now-upbeat version of the song, eventually being joined onstage by Beryl, Martin, and Jerry Jo. While they perform, the authorities pull up to the barn to arrest Martin, but they decide to let him off the hook and enjoy the show instead. Impressed by the performance, Flam Banjo offers the Shoeshiners a record deal, finally giving them their big break.
On the drive back home at the end of the night, Kiff and Barry sleep silently in the backseat, snuggled up in a blanket.
