"Kindergarten Derby" is the first segment of the twenty-ninth episode of Recess.
Synopsis[]
The Kindergartners compete in a race to win a wish from King Bob, which Mikey objects to because of how it exploits them.
Plot[]
King Bob announces the annual Kindergarten Derby where older kids pick a kindergartner to represent them in the games with the winner allowed to be granted any wish by the King. Mikey is against it as he feels that it is demeaning towards the kids, but he is ignored by everyone including the rest of the Gang. As he sulks, he is approached by Tubby the Kindergartener who wishes to compete to prove that he can win, as he does not care about being granted a wish. With no other option, Mikey decides to train him.
King Bob picks Gilbert, a hyperactive and fast kindergartner while the rest of the Gang pick Cindy, a girl with high energy who gets distracted easily. As Mikey prepares Tubby, he starts to notice that he is getting better at running, but still does not believe he can win. He finally reveals to him that when he was in the Kindergarten Derby at his age, he failed to finish it because he was mocked by the other kids for his girth. Tubby still wants to compete and insists that they train harder so that they can win.
On the day of the race, Mikey decides to bet his winger dingers on Tubby to prove that he an win. Gretchen will later tell him that due to the odds, he can have enough winger dingers to last him through high school. All the kindergartners race, but many fall out leaving just Tubby and Gilbert. At the last minute Tubby wins and is allowed a wish, with it being that the Kindergarten Derby be cancelled. Everyone is shocked, but Tubby points out that even though the older kids went through it, does not mean they should pass it on. King Bob reluctantly agrees and officially cancels future derbies.
