King Brian is a character in the 1959 Disney film, Darby O'Gill and the Little People. He is the 5,000 year old king of the Leprechauns (Little People). He was portrayed by the late Jimmy O'Dea.
Role in the film
When Darby O'Gill was forced to retire, Brian brought him to his kingdom but he tricked him by making go on a fox hunt so Darby can leave. But Brian angrily came to Darby's house to take him back. Darby tricked him again by keeping him all night so Darby can get three wishes. When Darby's daughter, Katie became ill and the Banshee summoned the coiste-bodhar, a spirituel coach driven by the dullahan to carry her soul to the Otherworld, Darby sacrificed himself for Katie by making his third wish to be in Katie's place and Brian granted it. To save Darby, Brian tricks him into making a final fourth wish ("wishing" that his friend could join him in the afterlife). Because he is only allowed three wishes, this negates all the previous wishes and spares Darby's life. Darby is saved and King Brian has (literally) the last laugh in their running battle of wits. Yet, Brian is so clever, he can get out of the Otherworld.
Quotes
- "Three wishes I'll grant you, great wishes or small, but you'll wish a fourth one, and you'll lose them all!"
