The King of Arendelle is a minor character in Once Upon a Time. He only appeared in the episode "A Tale of Two Sisters" in the form of flashbacks.
He is based on King Agnarr from the Frozen franchise.
Role in the series[]
Just like the animated film, the king and queen Gerda ventured off on a voyage for two weeks to find answers for Elsa's ice magic, but never returned after losing their lives at sea, when Elsa and Anna were teenagers. Two years following this loss, Elsa became queen of Arendelle and Anna was getting married to Kristoff.
While showing Anna their mother's wedding dress, Elsa came across a diary that belonged to their mother and learnt the king and queen feared her because of her ice magic. Reading this, Elsa started to blame herself for the deaths of her and Anna's parents and for the fact that the king wouldn't be able to walk Anna down the aisle at her wedding. Anna tried to prove that the king and queen weren't afraid of Elsa by planning to travel to Misthaven to get answers, saying she would be back in two weeks, but Elsa becomes worried for her sister as that was what their parents said before they left for their fatal voyage.
Anna left for Misthaven, but couldn't get actual answers, but came to control her powers like her parents wanted, thanks to training from Ingrid, who was revealed to be the aunt to the sisters, the sister to Gerda, therefore making her the king's sister-in-law.
The reason why the king and queen went on their voyage is eventually revealed to Elsa, which Anna struggled to tell her sister, although she would eventually learn the truth.
Trivia[]
- It's actually unknown if this version of the character has the same name as his animated counterpart as his name is never mentioned on screen.
- Unlike the original character, the King of Arendelle does not give Elsa her gloves to conceal her magic (unless it happened off-screen). Instead it is her aunt Ingrid who received the gloves and was given them by Rumplestiltskin.
