- “Well, the Outsiders come from many prides. But, when they are born, they are hated because they are different from their tribe. Sometimes, when the people most like you don't love you, it is a hurt that can cause the greatest pain. And this pain can lead you to hate everything.”
- ―Rafiki to Kiara, about the Outsiders[src]
Kiros' Pride (also known as the Outsiders) is a group of supporting antagonists in the 2024 Disney photorealistic CGI film Mufasa: The Lion King. They are a pride of white lions outcasted for their white fur.
Background[]
Described by Eshe as larger than normal lions and "white as ghosts", Kiros' Pride is comprised of entirely white lions who follow their tyrannical ruler, Kiros. Zazu commented they follow the continuation of their own bloodline, seeing everyone (even other lions) as a threat to their survival. And according to Rafiki, the outsiders come from many different prides, however each of them were hated for being different from the moment they were born and were sent away from their respective prides as a result. In the process, the outsiders only knew pain and hate, not at all having any ounce of honor or respect for the circle of life.
Appearances[]
Mufasa: The Lion King[]
Under Kiros's leadership, the Outsiders resolved to kill every pride in the Valley of Kings. One day, Azibo and Kiros's son, Shaju, attacked Eshe, only for Mufasa to leap to her defense. In the ensuing fight, Mufasa threw Shaju onto the sharp point of a log, killing him, and Azibo fled.
Shortly afterwards, Azibo reported what had happened to Kiros, who questioned why he had survived, while Shaju had not. Azibo claimed that he had been badly injured, but Akua and Amara determined that only one lion had left blood on his mane; therefore, they reasoned, he had abandoned Shaju to die. As recompense for his son's death, Kiros allowed his pride to kill Azibo.
Swearing vengeance, Kiros confronted Obasi's pride alongside his followers. Though Obasi protested that there were rules among lions, Kiros declared that he had killed every pride in the Valley of Kings, except Obasi's, as it was his intent to be the sole Lion King. He asked which of them had killed his son, and Akua and Amara revealed that Mufasa and Taka had fled. In their absence, the Outsiders killed Obasi's entire pride.
After defeating Obasi's pride, the Outsiders tracked Mufasa and Taka to a river. There, Kiros asked which one of them had killed his son, and Mufasa took the blame, lying that Taka was nothing more than a stray. However, Akua and Amara proclaimed that Taka carried the blood of the pride, and so, Kiros ordered his pride to attack. Mufasa and Taka fled to the edge of a waterfall, with the Outsiders chasing them. Thinking quickly, Taka knocked them both into the river below. Kiros ordered one of his lionesses to follow them, but she was devoured by crocodiles.
Continuing on, the Outsiders caught up to Mufasa, Taka, and their allies (Sarabi, Zazu, and Rafiki) once again at the Great Canyon. However, as they began to cross a bridge made of rock pillars, Sarabi incited an elephant stampede that destroyed the rock pillar bridge, thus cutting off the Outsiders' pursuit. Enraged, Kiros roared, and Zazu taunted the Outsiders as they were forced to find another way across the canyon.
Eventually, the Outsiders lost Mufasa's trail on a snowy mountain. At that moment, Taka approached them and allied with Kiros, claiming that Mufasa had gotten his father, Obasi, killed, just as he had killed Kiros's son. Taka then agreed to lead the Outsiders to Mufasa's destination, Milele, and pledged his loyalty to Kiros.
Keeping his word, Taka left a trail of claw marks for the outsiders to follow. Once Mufasa had reached Milele, the Outsiders confronted him, and Kiros revealed Taka's treachery. A battle broke out, during which Kiros forced Mufasa into an underground cave. The two continued to fight, with Kiros getting the upper hand, until Taka jumped in-between them to save Mufasa's life. As Mufasa and Taka took on Kiros together, an earthquake split the land, causing Akua and Amara to fall to their deaths in a fissure, and causing Mufasa and Kiros to fall into an underground pool. They fought on, during which Mufasa sensed a falling boulder and hurled Kiros underneath it, killing him. It is possible that some Outsiders survived and those remaining departed Milele.
Trivia[]
- Disney previously used a concept of antagonistic lions in The Lion King II: Simba's Pride and The Lion Guard, which featured a pride of different outsider lions led by Zira. However, unlike the outsiders led by Zira featured in Simba's Pride which mostly consisted of lionesses in addition to containing Nuka, the outsiders featured in Mufasa: The Lion King consist of not just lionesses but also male lions as well.
- In real life, white or albino lions are extremely rare; while there are more than 500 in captivity all over the world, as of 2024, there are currently less than thirteen living in the wild.
