Kotu is a supporting character in Disney's 2024 animated feature film Moana 2. He is a Kakamora warrior and assassin who forms an alliance with Moana to break the curse surrounding the island of Motufetu.
Kotu is the son of the Kakamora Chief. By the time of Moana’s adventures, the Kakamoras had been aimlessly sailing the seas to find their home island, which had been lost when the storm god Nalo cut off the ocean’s channels by sinking the island of Motufetu. Kotu is the most skilled warrior of his tribe. He is equipped with paralyzing blow darts and exhibits pinpoint accuracy. He is adorned in armor made of shark teeth and the spine of a lion fish.
Role in the film[]
Moana encounters Kotu as the Kakamora are fending off a giant clam, which devours one of their barges. Moana uses the power of the Kakamora’s fleet to pull her canoe from the giant clam’s maw, but Kotu intervenes. He paralyzes Moana, Moni, Loto, Kele, and Pua, preparing to kill them. However, the chicken Heihei unintentionally unveils that the crew are searching for Motufetu, prompting the Kakamora Chief to form an alliance with Moana. The Kakamora explain that they’ve been searching for their lost island since Nalo enacted his curse, but have been unsuccessful. They offer to help Moana defeat the giant clam in exchange for breaking Nalo’s curse, which Moana agrees. Kotu assists Moana on her mission, equipping her with a poison-covered spear intended to defeat the monster. The spear is lost in the battle, and Moana’s canoe is quickly pulled into the clam’s maw, with the Kakamora barge being dragged along with it. To save his people, Kotu cuts the rope connecting their vessels, sacrificing himself and Moana’s crew, who are eaten by the clam. Inside, Kotu protects the humans from monsters while they search for the separated Moana. They are eventually freed with the help of Matangi, and continue their journey to Motufetu with the aid of Maui. Kotu joins in battling against Nalo and his forces, and through a personal sacrifice from Moana, sees the rise of Motufetu. In the epilogue, Moana and her crew reunite Kotu with his family, who have returned to their home island.
