The Duchy of Lantern Waste is a location featured in the 2005 Disney/Walden Media adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It is a forest located within the magical world of Narnia within the eponymous nation.
Background[]
Located within the northwestern area of Narnia, Lantern Waste consisted of a heavily wooded territory within the world itself where many Earth-native humans began their adventures within. It was the location where the Wardrobe served as a portal from Earth to Narnia, as well as the community of Beaver's Dam. This location was named after a lamppost within the area whose light was never extinguished and also existed in Narnia since the world's creation. It also serves as a home to Mr. Tumnus, a faun whom Lucy encountered in Narnia.
Points of interest[]
- Lamppost: A lamppost whose light was never extinguished. It was placed within the kingdom of Narnia ever since the creation of Earth. This location was named after the lamppost that sits across the forest.
- Mr. Tumnus' House: A rock formation serving as the home to the faun Tumnus.
- Western Woods:[1] A large forested area located within the Lantern Waste territory.
- Allies' Enclave:[1] A small clearing located within the Western Woods.
- Beaver's Dam: An artifact serving as a landmark within the Lantern Waste. It was the home to Mr. and Mrs. Beaver before its destruction caused by the Secret Police.
Role in the film[]
As Lucy enters the magical world of Narnia via Wardrobe at Digory Kirke's House, she explores the snowy forest and encounters a lamppost within the Lantern Waste territory. As she touches it, she encounters Mr. Tumnus, a faun wandering around which she reacts in shock, causing him to also react in shock. As she asks him if he was hiding, Tumnus denies, telling her that he didn't mean to scare him. Tumnus realizes that Lucy is a human, telling her that she is at the world of Narnia, just as Lucy tells him that she went through the Wardrobe via spare room.
Just as Lucy makes friends with Tumnus, he shows her his house where he would offer her tea. Lucy holds a picture of Tumnus' father, which reminds her of her father who went off to war, which Tumnus shares the same story of his father at war a long time ago before a hundred-year winter, due to a winter spell cast upon the kingdom of Narnia. After sharing his story of the happy moments he had at Narnia before the curse, Tumnus plays his flute to play a lullaby that puts Lucy to sleep while staring at a fireplace seeing visions of dancing Narnians within. As Lucy wakes up, Tumnus fears that he is a terrible faun, which Lucy denies; she learns from him that Jadis the White Witch was the one who spread an eternal winter across Narnia where she gave orders to everyone as well as having no celebrations of festival holidays within. Tumnus then escorts Lucy to safety in trying to avoid getting caught by the Secret Police, sending her back home to the real world via Wardrobe for safety.
Later that night, Edmund enters the Wardrobe and finds himself within the Lantern Waste looking for Lucy. Just as he arrives and thinks he believes in her, he passes by the lamppost and stumbles upon Jadis and her sleigh of reindeer with Ginarrbrik on her side. Just as Edmund approaches her, he tells her that he was following his sister who encountered Mr. Tumnus when Peter and Susan wouldn't believe in what Lucy said just before offering Edmund some Turkish delight. After enjoying, Jadis shows Edmund the two hills where her castle is located, which would be a lot of room for more Turkish delight just before she departs using her sleigh. Lucy suddenly finds Edmund who was worried that she was looking for him just before the two return to the real world again.
After causing a commotion during a game of cricket when Edmund accidentally breaks a window after hitting a ball through it, the Pevensies hide from Mrs. Macready as they end up at the Lantern Waster in Narnia. Upon arriving, Peter apologizes to Lucy that he didn't believe about her claims of Narnia's existence. Lucy asks the Pevensies to look for Mr. Tumnus by going to the spot where Tumnus would be, only to find a warrant inside the house showing of Tumnus' arrest signed by Maugrim, the captain of the Secret Police, revealing that Tumnus was captured. Suddenly, Susan noticed a robin alerting the Pevensies that he found someone coming for help, which they suddenly find a nearby beaver. Mr. Beaver approaches Lucy and gives her the hankie that she gave to Mr. Tumnus just as they decide to follow the beaver who knows about Tumnus where he leads them to Beaver's Dam where Mrs. Beaver is happy to see her husband. Just as they arrive, the beavers tell the Pevensies of a prophecy of them being able to save Narnia from Jadis' tyranny since Aslan's return to Narnia just before they escaped, due to the Secret Police destroying the dam where they find themselves at the Witch's Castle.
After the Pevensies became Kings and Queens of Narnia, they ride on their horses across the Western Woods to capture the White Stag where they attempt to catch him to get their wishes granted. Throughout the chase, the Pevensies were unable to catch the Stag and unintentionally encountered the same lamppost seen at the area where they first entered Narnia just as they find their way back to Earth via wardrobe into Professor Digory Kirke's mansion.
Video game appearances[]
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe[]
The Lantern Waste appears in the video game adaptation of the film. In the console versions of the game, the location first appears in the "Glimpse of Narnia" level where the player is introduced to two types of attacks: the special attack which consumes energy, like most special abilities, as well as the weak attack which does not consume energy.
As the level begins, the player learns special abilities by grabbing tokens in the first part before advancing throughout the level in order for the player to help prepare for further levels set in Narnia. Once the player collects all six tokens, they will unlock the "Team Up" abilities as revealed via in-game message. In addition to this, the player is also introduced to wolves as the first enemies they will encounter in the game which the player must fight off and defeat them in combat in the level's first checkpoint. The second checkpoint is where player is ambushed by more wolves, which the player must light their torch and ignite the bushes where the wolves are coming from to keep extra wolves from coming (doing so also rewards the player a shield) and then break through the frozen brambles with Edmund's special attack, which also completes the level.
The eponymous level titled "Lantern Waste" has the player exploring the world of Narnia, this time with Peter and Susan alongside Edmund and Lucy. In addition to containing the first part where the Pevensies explore Narnia, the level also including an avalanche sliding sequence which the player must avoid obstacles during the sequence. Upon surviving the avalanche, the player will end up at a frozen thick ice where they must use either Edmund or Lucy, due to the ice being sensitive to Peter or Susan by walking on several soft sections to get through the frozen water safely. In addition, the player is also introduced to statues of petrified Narnians which the player can interact with to collect them (also required for a full game completion). Just as the player progresses throughout this level, they will encounter dwarfs attacking them with their bows and arrows, serving as a threat to this level. The last part of the level involves the player fighting off a group of wolves (twenty in total) which the player must defeat the wolves in order to finish.
The "To Western Wood" level focuses on the Pevensies being aided by Mr. Beaver in this level. The player will also find Mr. Tumnus' panpipes which Susan can use to put many creatures (particularly enemies) to sleep by standing on a nearby spot. Along the way, the player encounters Mr. Beaver who helps clear the path by gnawing on the fallen trees while defending him from wolves. Just as Mr. Beaver helps the heroes, they encounter a large ogre which Mr. Beaver tells Susan to use the panpipes to put the ogre to sleep without getting too close. Upon doing so, the player must get past the ogre, but is ambushed by a pack of wolves. During the ambush, the ogre suddenly wakes up and the player must hide between rocks to avoid getting seen. As the ogre barges through rocks, the Pevensies end up in a tree full of ghouls which the player must fend off just before the ogre arrives. The player must hide the Pevensies again to avoid getting seen.
Trivia[]
- It is unknown of what happened to the lamppost within the Lantern Waste area, as it was never mentioned in The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. It is likely that it was extinguished or destroyed by invaders such as Telmarines after the Pevensies left Narnia as can be evidenced in the Narnia map reflecting Narnia's Telmarine dynasty.[2]
- During the scene of filming the part where Jadis is pulling her sleigh of reindeer, the Narnia production team asked permission to bring the reindeer to New Zealand; however, they were denied by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, due to issues with a disease type the North American reindeer population suffer from. As a result, they were replaced by animatronic reindeer used for the shots where the deer were standing in place.[3]
- The scenes that took place within the forested areas of the Lantern Waste were filmed within Griffith Park in California - specifically the Western Woods part.[4]
