Lawrence "Larry" Lightyear[1] is a deleted character from the production of Lightyear. He is the father of Buzz Lightyear.
He was however first referenced in Toy Story 2 where Buzz told his archnemesis Zurg that he killed him, but the latter replied that he was his father. He was originally intended to debut in Lightyear, but was scrapped because the producers felt his appearance in the film as Zurg was too predictable with the twist.[citation needed]
Development[]
In early production, Buzz would walk into a small museum building featuring posters of his father who was very famous. As shown on television by a reporter many years ago, he was also revealed to have gone missing during a record-breaking flight, causing Buzz to think of his flashback of a child where he and everyone else believed that he perished. When he later met his father's robotic pet parrot, Polly, the latter screened a recording of Lawrence himself, revealing he was alive and that the people lied to him that he was not. Lawrence told Buzz in the message to meet him in the year 3000 and find his beacon.
Buzz would later reunite with his father in the future at his own home, and the two would happily hug each other after being apart for too long.
Things started to get a little bit dark when Larry showed Buzz all the great advanced technology. Buzz was shocked and worried about his father working for the aliens, as said by the other rangers, Larry replies that he does not work for them, but owes them. Soon the room would enter a giant purple robot, Buzz gained fright and blasted at it, but Larry halted him and claimed that it would not hurt him. Buzz replied that it was trying to kill him since he got back home, but Larry, in turn, said that they had been trying to help him since he got to his said location and ordered them to find his son. Larry also explains that he was in bad shape when he sent him that message, and almost died, but the Zurg found him and saved his life. Then said their technology was incredible and far superior to theirs back home. So, he made them a deal, helped them about a bit, and gave them what they always wanted to break light speed. He then says they will not need it anymore and are about to get something "much better". He and Buzz enter the control room and press an active button to go "beyond and infinity".
What happens afterwards is unknown.
As mentioned above, this did not make it to the final film because the producers felt it was too predictable with the twist. When asked why Zurg in Lightyear is not Buzz's father as was established in Toy Story 2, director Angus MacLane responded they were unable to figure out how he could properly be established as his parent. Instead, they changed Zurg to be Buzz himself, so that he would be his own greatest enemy, not just figuratively, but also literally.[2] But Buzz briefly mistakes Zurg for his father when he is revealed to be an elderly Buzz from an alternate future.
Trivia[]
- His name Larry, is most likely based on one of Buzz's concept names "Lunar Larry".
