Lena Waithe is an American actress, voice actress, producer, and screenwriter, known for creating the Showtime drama series The Chi and the BET comedy shows Boomerang and Twenties. She is best known as the actress and writer of the Netflix comedy-drama series Master of None, which led her to become the first African-American woman to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series in 2017. She also appears in the 2018 science fiction adventure film Ready Player One, by Steven Spielberg.
For Disney, she voiced Specter in the 2020 Disney/Pixar film Onward, which is the first animated film in Disney media that features an LGBTQ character, as Waithe herself is to be openly lesbian in real life.[1] She also provides a special guest voice as college Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins in the 2022 animated reboot The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder on Disney+.[2][3]
