One morning, Rabbit storms into Pooh's house, demanding that Pooh return the shovel he has borrowed from him, so that Rabbit can grow more carrots for his midnight snacks. Rabbit angrily orders Pooh to never borrow anything from him again. Pooh states that he left the shovel in the closet. Rabbit retrieves his shovel but is trampled by all of the junk in the closet. Later that night, Rabbit goes back to his garden. As he stuffs his shovel into the soil and marches off, he trips over his wheelbarrow and falls face first into the dirt. Realizing that he is having a hard time seeing in the dark, Rabbit borrows Gopher's helmet while he is sleeping, and goes back to work.
The next morning, Gopher is now scared of the dark since he cannot find his helmet. Whenever he hears someone say the word "dark", he becomes extremely frightened and panics. Rabbit recalls that he forgot to return the helmet last night. He sprints back to his house and rummages through his wheelbarrow, but the helmet's nowhere to be found. He frantically digs all around his garden, but still no helmet.
Meanwhile, Pooh mistakenly believes he lost Gopher's helmet so he travels down to Gopher's hole to look for it. Tigger, Rabbit, and Eeyore follow Pooh and join in the search.
Deeper in the tunnels, Tigger becomes worried that they are lost, and wants Rabbit to help them. Pooh tells Rabbit that he was the one that lost Gopher's helmet, and that Rabbit knows how to get them out. Rabbit then breaks down, yelling that he can't get them out, and admits that he was the one who lost Gopher's helmet.
Piglet and Gopher catch up to them and end up in Rabbit's house. Piglet finds Gopher's helmet under Rabbit's pillow. Rabbit is about to return it to Gopher who says that doesn't need his helmet and claims that he is no longer afraid of the dark. The word "dark" also makes Rabbit faint, probably since he learns his lesson to not plant carrots in the dark- however, he also could be afraid of noises in the dark. Pooh begins to eat Rabbit's honey, when Rabbit is about to take the pot back. However after remembering what happened when he borrowed Gopher's helmet, he decides that Pooh can have some.
