An elegant weapon for a more civilized age.
Obi-Wan Kenobi

The lightsaber, also referred to as a laser sword, is a plasma-bladed weapon in the Star Wars universe. It consists of a polished metal hilt which projects a laser based beam of energy generated from the kyber crystal that serves as the blade's energy source. The lightsaber is the signature weapon of both the Jedi and the Sith, both of whom can use it for close-range combat to deflect blaster bolts and more.

Usage[]

The lightsaber's blade can burn and cut through most substances without resistance. It leaves cauterized wounds or burns in flesh, but can be deflected by another lightsaber's blade, or by energy shields. In addition, some exotic saber-proof materials, such as Phrik or Beskar, have been introduced in the Expanded Universe. An active lightsaber gives off a distinctive hum, which rises or lowers in pitch and volume as the blade is moved rapidly through the air. Some lightsabers have higher or lower pitched hums than what is considered typical. Bringing the blade into contact with an object or another lightsaber's blade produces a loud crackle. The lightsaber is designed as much for elegance in combat as for ceremony, the lightsaber was a distinctive weapon, the very image of which was inextricably bound with the mythos of the Jedi Order and their polar opposites, the Sith. The lightsaber also became synonymous with the Jedi Order's values to uphold peace and justice throughout the galaxy. This perception endured, despite the many conflicts with lightsaber-wielding Sith Lords and Dark Jedi.

The weapon consists of a smooth, solid, laser-like blade comprised of pure plasma emitted from the hilt and suspended in a force containment field. The field contains the immense heat of the plasma, protecting the wielder, and allows the blade to keep its shape. The hilt is almost always self-fabricated by the wielder to match his or her specific needs, preferences, and style. Due to the weightlessness of blade and the strong gyroscopic effect generated by it, lightsabers require a great deal of strength and dexterity to wield, and it is extremely difficult - and dangerous - for the untrained to attempt using one, especially in combat. The blades of some lightsabers such as the Darksaber feel heavy in spite of their weightless energy blades, and it takes great skill and practice to overcome this, as energy constantly flows through the cyber crystals powering the blade. As a result, using a lightsaber such as the Darksaber isn't so much fighting with a blade as directing a current of power; one controlled by the wielder's thoughts and actions, which are converted into energy that flowed through the crystal and become part of the blade itself. When practiced with, such a lightsaber will slowly connect with its wielder, becoming an extension of their body and will. In the hands of an expert of the Force or one who understands this concept, the lightsaber is a weapon to be greatly respected and feared. To wield a lightsaber is to demonstrate incredible skill and confidence, as well as masterful dexterity and attainment to the Force.

Lightsabers are powered by kyber crystals, the color of which also usually determined the color of the weapon's blade. However, if infected with the dark side of the Force, as revealed in Ahsoka, kyber crystals will turn red, using a technique known as "making the crystal bleed". The process can also be reversed by purifying the crystal with the light side of the Force, turning them white.

The Force Awakens 3

A crossguard lightsaber.

Kylo Ren, from the sequel trilogy, utilizes a lightsaber design that features two energy crossguards, giving it the appearance of a sword. The lightsaber's blade funnels like fire and is outlined with red static electricity instead of solidifying into the smooth, laserbeam-like blade, as typical lightsabers possess. The reason for this is that Kylo Ren's lightsaber utilizes a cracked and damaged kyber crystal, and the resulting instability of the blade necessitates vents and focusing crystal activators to channel the weapon's excess energy, creating the quillons (crossguards). His blade has a similar appearance to a lightsaber blade emitted using a compressed or unstable synthetic lightsaber crystal, such of which were seen in the "Legends Continuity" of the Expanded Universe.

During High Republic Era, Jedi starfighters known as the Jedi Vector featured lightsaber-activated weapon systems, which could only be accessed if a Lightsaber was placed on an activation panel in the cockpit.

Known Types of Lightsabers[]

  • Standard lightsaber: A standard lightsaber consists of a straight hilt and is single-bladed. It is the most common type of lightsaber.
  • Double-bladed lightsaber: A double-bladed lightsaber features a blade emitted from both ends. It is similar to a quarterstaff. Notable users include Darth Maul, his brother, Savage Opress, the Jedi Temple Guards, and Jaro Tapal.
    • Hinged double-bladed lightsaber: A hinged double-bladed lightsaber was effectively two single-blade lightsabers joined together by a hinge at their pommels. Notable users include Pong Krell, the Jedi Temple Guards (in a vision), and Dark Side Rey (in a vision).
    • Double-bladed spinning lightsaber: A double-bladed spinning lightsaber is a specially-designed model that is capable of both single and double blades, besides being able of spinning in a circular motion when both of them are emitted. The Double-bladed spinning lightsaber's overall design hardly makes it any bigger than a single-emitter lightsaber, a stark contrast to the design of dual-blade weapons. It can also be utilized for flight, given the high speed of its spinning capabilities. The lightsaber does suffer from a design flaw: if given the opening, an opponent can cut through the disc from the inside of the ring, causing the weapon to fly apart if spinning. The Double-bladed spinning lightsaber is also can allow its user to fly by using the lightsaber blades as helicopter rotors. All Inquisitors use this type of lightsaber.
    • Split saber: A split saber is a type of double-bladed lightsaber that can split into two single-bladed lightsabers, effectively being two normal lightsabers that can interlock their hilts together. Asajj Ventress is the most notable user of this variant. Cal Kestis also made a split saber after damaging his previous weapon.
  • Dual-phase lightsaber: A dual-phase lightsaber is similar to a standard one, only that it contains two or more kyber crystals, allowing its blade length and width to be adjusted. Darth Vader's lightsaber is of this variant. It is also used by Dooku.
  • Crossguard lightsaber: A crossguard lightsaber is an ancient design with one or two blades emitter protruding near the first one at a 45-degree or 90-degree angle to the axis of the hilt. The second and third blades are dagger-sized, making it look similar in appearance to a knight's broadsword. Lightsabers with unstable or damaged crystals, like Kylo Ren's, require crossguards to vent the excess energy emitted by the main blade and keep the weapon from overloading. Crossguard lightsabers are one of the most ancient design variations seen in lightsabers, as they date back thousands of years.
  • Curved-hilt lightsaber: A curved-hilt lightsaber is a design which features a hilt with a built in curve, it is design to utilize one-handed fighting styles such as Makashi, or to provide variable blade angles to confuse opponents. It is similar to swords such as the foil, cutlass or rapier. Dooku and Asajj Ventress are the most notable users of this variant.
  • Lightsaber-blaster hybrid: A lightsaber-blaster hybrid combines both the titular energy sword and a blaster pistol. The only known lightsaber-blaster hybrid belonged to Ezra Bridger, prior to it being destroyed by Darth Vader.
  • Lightsaber pike: A lightsaber pike is similar to a double-bladed lightsaber, featuring two shorter-than-average plasma blades on each side of the pike. They are shorter than normal double-bladed lightsabers and are similar to a staff or a lance. Jedi Temple Guards use this variant. The Sith Lord Darth Bane also had a lightsaber pike (which resembles a spear) that ignites a flat orange blade when activated.
  • Cane lightsaber: A cane lightsaber is concealed as the head of a cane and is similar to a walking stick. In combat, the handle is detached from the body of the cane and wielded normally. Cane-disguised lightsabers are usually used by elderly lightsaber duelists, like Tera Sinube and Maul.
  • Training lightsaber: A training lightsaber has limited power and thus limited the danger of them being used by Jedi Initiates before they underwent the Gathering, or are assigned or selected by a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master and build a weapon of their own. They are lightsabers that possessed a highly intensified electromagnetic containment field which is far more difficult to penetrate than that of a standard lightsaber. Thus the energy which formed the blade is better contained and able to do far less damage, and would result in welts, bruises, and minor burns instead of amputation or death. This feature could be readjusted by a fully trained Jedi to enable a Jedi Knight or Jedi Master to utilize a trainee's weapon in emergencies.
  • Shoto lightsaber: A shoto lightsaber is short and similar to a dagger or analogous to the real-life Wakizashi short sword used by Samurai warriors. Yoda carries a shoto lightsaber. Many Jedi, such as Ahsoka Tano, also use it as a support weapon in their off-hand. Most Jedi use shoto lightsabers in dual-lightsaber combat.
  • The Darksaber: The Darksaber is a rare black-bladed lightsaber that is flattened and comes to a point like a traditional sword, rather than the rounded beam of more standard lightsabers and its hilt was made of beskar (a lightsaber-proof metal). This lightsaber variant is an ancient design. The only known example of this currently belongs to Bo-Katan Kryze after she inhertied it after becoming leader of Mandalore. Pre Vizsla, one of its previous owners, is a descendant of Mandalorian Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order who created it. Following Tarre's passing, the weapon was kept in the Coruscant Jedi Temple until it was stolen by members of House Vizsla during the Fall of the Old Republic.
  • Lightsaber rifle: A lightsaber rifle is a type of blaster that lightsabers could be fit into to serve as the weapon's ammunition. When fired, the rifle turned the lightsaber's plasma blade into a devastating beam that is powerful enough to injure a heavily armored foe. Jocasta Nu obtained one such weapon and used it against Darth Vader when she attempted to recover a holocron from the destroyed Jedi Temple.

Known Lightsabers[]

  • Jedi lightsaber: A Jedi lightsaber is specialized and catered to the needs and preferences of the Jedi Order. This type of lightsabers utilize natural kyber crystals from caves and the like, while others utilizes synthetic kyber crystals (artificially created kyber crystals). The appearance of these lightsabers are designed to serve as a symbol of peace and justice, being them also a symbol of the Jedi. Traditionally, these weapons are all blue or green-bladed, although some of them are known to be yellow-green, yellow, purple, black (only one called the Darksaber, which was created by Tarre Vizsla), or white lightsabers . The white color of the blades is usually a result of healing kyber crystals infected with the dark side of the Force.
  • Sith lightsaber: A Sith lightsaber is specialized and catered to the needs and preferences of the Sith Order. Most of the lightsabers of this type utilize synthetic kyber crystals while others utilizes natural kyber crystals. The appearance of these lightsabers are designed to intimidate the opponents of the Sith, being them also a symbol of the Sith. Traditionally, they are all red-bladed lightsabers. Despite this, when Anakin Skywalker already had become Darth Vader, he kept using his blue-bladed Jedi lightsaber and used it to fight Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith. The red color of the blades is usually a result of infecting its kyber crystals with the dark side of the Force, which causes the crystal to "bleed".

Known Metal Alloys[]

Metal alloys that have been discovered or invented by both the Jedi and the Sith over the years and are used in the construction of their lightsabers. Most of these metal alloys have been seen or mentioned in the prequel trilogy, the original trilogy, the sequel trilogy, as well as in the animated series of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

  • Solid Heavy-Duty: Solid Heavy-Duty is a metal alloy that is used in lightsabers of duelists who favor maximum strength. This alloy is also extremely durable, but not as strong as Phrik. Anakin Skywalker used this alloy in the construction of his first and second blue-bladed lightsabers.
  • Chrome: Chrome is a metal alloy that is used in lightsabers of duelists who favor maximum speed and dexterity. This alloy is also extremely durable, but not as strong as Phrik. Yoda used this alloy in the construction of his own green-bladed shoto lightsaber.
  • Black Alloy: Black Alloy is an unnamed black metal alloy that might be combined with Solid Heavy-Duty to construct lightsabers. They are extremely durable, but not as strong as Phrik. Anakin Skywalker used this alloy in the construction of his first and second blue-bladed lightsabers as well as to build his red-bladed lightsaber after he became Darth Vader.
  • Phrik: Phrik is a rare and completely indestructible metal alloy used in the construction of lightsabers, allowing them to repel even the blades of other lightsabers. Sheev Palpatine used this metal to create his signature lightsabers, decorating them with Electrum and making them more sophisticated and elegant.
  • Electrum: Electrum is a rare metal alloy that is purely cosmetic, used in creating an aesthetically pleasing hilt for lightsabers. Sheev Palpatine, a known patron of the arts, used this alloy combined with Phrik in the construction of his two lightsabers to make them look more beautiful and elegant.
  • Beskar: Beskar is an extremely durable lightsaber-proof metal. Mandalorians are well known for using it to make their armor and weapons. Tarre Vizsla used Beskar to make the Darksaber's hilt.

Known Non-Metal Alloys[]

Non-metal alloys that have been discovered by both the Jedi and the Sith over the years and are used in the construction of their lightsabers. Most of these non-metal alloys have been seen or mentioned in the prequel trilogy, the original trilogy, the sequel trilogy, as well as in the animated series of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

  • Brylark tree: The Brylark trees have a type of wood that is strong as metal and is used in the construction of lightsabers. While this alloy is rarely used by most Jedi to build their lightsabers, they are commonly used by Wookiee Jedi since Brylark trees are located on the planet Kashyyyk.

Known Lightsaber Combat Forms[]

Lightsaber combat is fluid and graceful, and can be utilized against blasters, a feat normally too difficult for opponents that do not possess a connection to the Force. There are seven known lightsaber combat forms.

  • Form I/Shii-Cho: Shii-Cho is a lightsaber combat form that focuses on offensive styles and disarming opponents. It is the most basic lightsaber combat form that is taught to all Jedi.
  • Form II/Makashi: Makashi is a lightsaber combat form that focuses on careful and controlled strikes, instead of power and strength. Dooku is a particularly notable practitioner of this form.
  • Form III/Soresu: Soresu is a lightsaber combat form that focuses on defensive styles, instead of offense. Kanan Jarrus and Obi-Wan Kenobi are particularly notable practitioners of this form.
  • Form IV/Ataru: Ataru is a lightsaber combat form that focuses on acrobatic styles. It is useful for blocking blaster fire, but is best suited for open spaces and attacking. At some point during the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker made some adjustments to Ataru intending to make it far more effective in defending against incoming projectiles or range attackers. Anakin, Qui-Gon Jinn, and Yoda are particularly notable practitioners of this form.
  • Form V/Shien/Djem So: Form V is a lightsaber combat form that that focuses on counter styles. Shien is useful in particular for countering ranged weaponry. On the other hand, Djem So focuses more on defending with solid blocks and parries, then immediately countering with strong counterattacks and ripostes, although it is also reasonably useful for blaster deflection. Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and Luke Skywalker are particularly notable practitioners of this form.
  • Form VI/Niman: Niman is a lightsaber combat form that focuses on the practitioners channelling their Force powers via a lightsaber. It is the least physical of the lightsaber combat forms and is especially useful for those wielding double-bladed lightsabers. Maul is a particularly notable practitioner of this form.
  • Form VII/Juyo/Vaapad: Form VII is a lightsaber combat form that focuses on aggressive and brutal styles. Juyo not only focuses on aggressive offense, but it also requires the practitioners to actively draw upon their anger and negative emotions to fuel the relentless assault. Meanwhile, Vaapad focuses on the practitioners to drew on their anger and passion, but in a controlled way. This is the most unpredictable and aggressive lightsaber combat form, with elements comprised of both light and dark side emotions. Palpatine, Mace Windu, Depa Billaba, and Shaak Ti are particularly notable practitioners of this form.

Known Lightsaber Combat Styles[]

Lightsaber combat styles that have been invented by both the Jedi and the Sith over the years. Most of these styles are not actual part of the seven lightsaber combat forms, but were likely created to make the seven forms far more effective in combat. Most of them have been seen or mentioned in the prequel trilogy, the original trilogy, the sequel trilogy, as well as in the animated series of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

  • Sai cha: Sai cha is a style that is for the user to cut off the head from the opponent's body. Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano are particularly notable practitioners of the style.

  • Shiak: Shiak is a style that is for the user to stab the opponent in the chest. Sheev Palpatine, Pong Krell, Maul, Asajj Ventress, and Anakin Skywalker are particularly notable practitioners of the style.
  • Sai: Sai is a style that is for the user to evade an attack directed at his/her legs. Dooku and Luke Skywalker are particularly notable practitioners of the style.
  • Jung ma: Jung ma is a style that is for the user to perform a 360-degree spin, in which power is gained for an imminent attack on the opponent.
  • Tràkata: Tràkata is a style that is for the user to take advantage of a lightsaber's ability to be turned on and off, quickly shutting off then re-igniting the lightsaber blade can confuse the user's opponent. Ahsoka Tano is a particularly notable practitioners of the style.
  • Whirlwind of Destiny: Whirlwind of Destiny is a style that is for the user to be flexible, spinning his/her body and lightsaber around like an actual whirlwind. It was developed during the Clone Wars by Jedi youngling Petro probably to make Form V, far more effective in blocking multiple blaster bolts. Petro is a particularly notable practitioner of the style.

Behind the Scenes[]

Concepts[]

Darth Vader Concept

Early concept of the lightsabers by Ralph McQuarrie.

The lightsaber was originally inspired by many of the romantic Pirate and Swashbuckling films that George Lucas watched and enjoyed as a child, which featured many characters wielding swords. When he began conceiving Star Wars, he wished to include swords, creating the "lightsaber" to allow them to better mesh with the futuristic setting.

In the early incarnations of the Star Wars storyline, lightsabers were not exclusive to the Jedi and other Force-users, but were in fact very mundane. Early concept art depicts lightsabers being wielded by Rebel and Imperial soldiers alike. George Lucas later limited the lightsabers to exclusively the Jedi in order to make them feel more unusual, and heighten the mystique of the Jedi. Also, in early drafts of the script, lightsabers were referred to as "lazerswords."

Early Stormtrooper concept 1

Early concept of the Stormtroopers wielding lightsabers.

George was adamant that the lightsabers were really heavy and powerful, and had to be wielded with both hands. The actors had to work with them as if they were heavy. They were originally meant to be held with two hands. But over the years, the two handed form slowly became both a two and one handed form as the fighting sequences became faster and more intense.

For the prequel trilogy, choreographer Nick Gilliard developed the lightsaber combat into a more fluid and dynamic style. Gilliard described the fights as "a game of chess moving at a thousand miles an hour" and compared each move to a check. Ray Park, who portrayed Darth Maul in the films, would help him to further develop the choreography.

Visual Effects[]

The original effect of the lightsaber was a rotating pole that had movie screen material applied to it, then using a compact motor within the hilt, the rod would rapidly rotate, reflecting the lights on set, creating an in-camera glowing effect. However, the glowing effect was not absolute, whenever the actor moved it out of a certain area, the glow would disappear and the actual spinning rod could be seen. These props were also highly limited, as they were cumbersome and fragile, often breaking them during fight scenes. In order to partially compensate for this, the blade was rotoscoped and an animated glow was added by tracing onto a blown-up copy of the frame with pen and colored ink, one frame at a time. It was at this phase the blades were given colors, as the props were simple white blades.

TESB - Mark Hamill and Bob Anderson dueling

Bob Anderson and Mark Hamill dueling with carbon rods.

The lightsaber is part live-action and part animation, with the editors using the real poles to tell them where the sword blades were. Sometimes they used a short blade as the actors would be fighting so close that they would hit the set and sometimes they would use no blade, because the blade would either turn on and off in a shot or what the actors were doing was so complicated, they could not do with swords themselves and they would add in the blades later, but it took a lot of very careful tracking.

When filming on the Prequel trilogy began, the lightsaber blades for The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones were made of steel and aluminum, which was highly durable, but frequently bent and flexed. When filming on Revenge of the Sith began, these blades were replaced by carbon fiber rods laminated with glass and plastic. These props were highly durable and did not flex, though they were extremely hard, and often caused bruising on the actors. While lightsaber effects were still done by rotoscoping, they were done digitally in the prequels, rather than by hand. In the sequel trilogy and onward, the lightsaber props used glowing blades. This not only added environmental realism that was desired by providing interactive lighting on the actors and the set, but also immersed the actors in the lightsaber experience, building on the performance and convincing nature of the lightsaber effect.

Sound Effects[]

The sound of the lightsabers were made by sound designer Ben Burtt, who also did the sound effects for R2-D2, the breathing of Darth Vader, and the blasters. His inspiration for the lightsaber sound came from his days as a projectionist when he was still a graduate student at USC (University of Southern California). There were these very old 35mm simplex projectors with inner locking motors. When they were idling, they produced these mysterious humming sounds that would slowly change in pitch, and it would beat against another motor. There were two motors and they would harmonize with each other, and that sound was the inspiration for the lightsabers. The buzzing sound combined with the humming was discovered by accident. Ben Burtt had a microphone with a broken mike cable (the shielding had come off), and he was recording something in the room of his apartment. When he passed his television set (which was on at the time without the sound turned up) with the microphone, it picked up the hum from the picture tube directly into the broken wire, creating the buzz that would be combined with the hum.

To achieve the sense of movement, Ben played the sound over a speaker and waved a shotgun microphone back and forth, producing a doppler effect that would become the sound of the lightsabers moving. The sound of dry ice reacting to metal was also used for both the "clashing" and "ignition" of the lightsabers, along with the sound of a suspended slinky, which was also used to create many of the blaster sound effects. A contact microphone would be attached to the slinky and that would pick up the sounds that travelled through the thin metal with reverb filter applied.

Notable Lightsabers[]

Lightsaber Description
Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader
Anakin Skywalker's first lightsaber
At the age of thirteen, the design of Anakin's first lightsaber had a blue plasma blade, chunky controls, and thick ridges on the handle. While fighting his way through the battle droid foundries on Geonosis, Skywalker had his lightsaber destroyed by a mechanical cutting arm. This saber was later used as the reference for rebuilding his Sith lightsaber upon his becoming Darth Vader.
Anakin Skywalker's Lightsaber

Incorporating many of the elements from his first weapon, Anakin's lightsaber was specifically designed to facilitate his practice of Form V combat. The lightsaber had a solid casing and a heavily shrouded blade emitter. The beveled emitter was designed to designate separate facets of the blade for either offensive or defensive purposes. The lightsaber hilt included a ridged hand grip, as Shien/Djem So required its users to maintain a solid grip on the hilt.

It had been his own weapon throughout the Clone Wars, until the end when he turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader. After his defeat on Mustafar, it was taken by Obi-Wan Kenobi for safekeeping, and later passed on to his son, Luke Skywalker. Luke would go on to use his father's lightsaber for three years while being part of the Rebellion. Luke lost the lightsaber, along side his right hand, in his second duel against Darth Vader on Bespin. Though this weapon was believed to be lost forever, it somehow ended up in the possession of Maz Kanata, who kept it for years. It was later used by Finn and Rey in their duel against Kylo Ren, where Rey claimed its possession.

The lightsaber was later presented to Luke on Ahch-To by Rey, as a sign that the galaxy needed him once again, but after she handed it to him, he tossed it aside, wanting nothing to do with the weapon or the Jedi. Rey used the weapon during her Jedi training with Luke. Later, it was used by Kylo Ren to kill his own master on the Supremacy. Right after, Kylo returned it to Rey, and she wielded it against Snoke's Praetorian guards. The weapon was broken in half when Rey and Kylo Ren both tried to Force pull it, and she took both pieces with her. Sometime after the Battle of Crait, Rey was able to heal the broken kyber crystal of the lightsaber using the fundamentals of Force healing described in the sacred Jedi texts, and then she reconstructed the weapon. During the Battle of Exegol, Rey gave the lightsaber to Ben Solo through their bond and he wielded his family heirloom to defeat the Knights of Ren. After Palpatine's death and the end of the war with the First Order, Rey buried it along with Leia's lightsaber in the ruins of the Lars homestead on Tatooine; retiring the weapon, as well as honoring the Skywalker family where their legacy began.

Darth Vader's Lightsaber Hilt

This weapon featured a thick, ridged handgrip, a high-output diatium power cell, a dual-phase focusing crystal, forward mounted adjustment knobs, and a beveled emitter shroud. Vader's lightsaber had an adjustable blade, which allowed the Sith Lord to manually adjust and control the size and width of the blade to suit his purposes. Vader was also known to have used the weapons against opponents other than Jedi, though he also sometimes preferred to use the Force against his victims.

Vader has been known to have experimented with a rounded emitter shroud similar to his first Jedi weapon. His lightsaber was also powered by a kyber crystal that was taken from the Jedi Master Kirak Infil'a after the Sith Lord murdered him. After corrupting and "bleeding" the crystal with the dark side of the Force, Vader's lightsaber gained its signature red blade. Vader would also originally use Infil'a's hilt for his lightsaber, but when it was destroyed in a fight with bounty hunters in a cantina, Vader rebuilt his weapon into the hilt that was a twisted version of his very first lightsaber from when he had been a Jedi Padawan it was presumably destroyed when the Rebels blew up the second Death Star.

Luke Skywalker
Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber

The construction of Luke's green lightsaber was based off schematics Luke found in Obi-Wan's hut on Tatooine. Luke was able to gather most of the parts he required to build his weapon from various vendors in the city of Mos Eisley, including a high-energy reflector cup, power cells, and a focusing lens. However, Luke was unable to obtain a lightsaber crystal and was forced to fabricate his own, utilizing a small blast furnace and a book of instructions found within the home of his fallen Master. The resulting hilt greatly resembled that of his late master, Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The weapon possessed superior balance to Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber. Possibly as a result of utilizing a thick kyber crystal, the lightsaber made a distinctive snap-hiss sound when activated, which was a different sound to that emitted by his father's weapon.

Luke was still in possession of the lightsaber during the time he started to train a new generation of Jedi. He wielded the lightsaber against the Knights of Ren on Elphrona. Luke was holding this lightsaber when he was briefly tempted to kill his own nephew, Ben Solo, after sensing the darkness inside him, which resulted in Ben waking up and trying to defend himself with his own lightsaber. After Ben fell to the dark side and Luke's Jedi Temple was destroyed, Luke took his lightsaber, as well as Leia's, with him to exile on Ahch-To, where he would never lay hands on it again for the rest of his life. After his death, it, along with all his other personal belongings remained in possession of the Caretakers on Ahch-To, but his spirit gave Leia's to Rey.

Obi-Wan Kenobi
Obi-Wan Kenobi's First Lightsaber
Obi-Wan's first lightsaber was based on the simple design of Qui-Gon Jinn's weapon. During the Invasion of Naboo, Obi-Wan lost this weapon during a duel with the Sith Lord Darth Maul, who kicked it into a reactor shaft inside the Theed power generator.
Obi-Wan Kenobi's Second Lightsaber
Obi-Wan's second lightsaber was constructed sometime after the Invasion of Naboo, after he lost his first lightsaber in a duel on Naboo against the Sith Lord Darth Maul. It exactly resembled his first saber. Obi-Wan lost this weapon when he was captured by Separatist leader Count Dooku on Geonosis.
Obi-Wan's Third Lightsaber

Obi-Wan's third lightsaber featured a much more skeletal make. The emitter was separated from the body of the weapon by a bronze and brass cut-back, thin "choke" portion which also held the reserve power cell. Immediately below this slim bar was the black ridged handgrip, which occupied the central third of the hilt. The activator was throttle-style, the same sort featured on Anakin Skywalker's second lightsaber. The covertec wheel was black held onto a rigged black extension. Finally sealing the hilt was a chrome emitter.

During Obi-Wan's exile on Tatooine, the lightsaber was adjusted in sections so that parts were black. This weapon was lost after Darth Vader killed him on the Death Star. He also wrote down instructions for creating a lightsaber. He based the schematics provided off his own, which resulted in the lightsabers created from the instructions bearing a strong resemblance to his weapon, starting with Luke Skywalker's.

Count Dooku
Count Dooku's Lightsaber
After Dooku left the Jedi Order, he replaced his blue kyber crystal with a new synthetic red crystal, signifying his journey to the dark side. It had a curved handle which allowed for precision control of where the blade would go. Dooku typically wielded the weapon one-handed but would use two hands when required. This weapon was destroyed when it entered the planet atmosphere of Coruscant.
Darth Maul
Maul's Lightsaber
Maul's customized double-bladed lightsaber was his signature weapon was actually two separate lightsabers fused end to end. Maul controlled the weapon with deadly precision able to quickly switch from attacking with one one blade to the other. The weapon was cut right down the middle by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the duel on Naboo, leaving him with only one blade. Half of it was presumed lost when Maul was presumed dead, however Maul had stored the lightsaber in a cave for over 12 years while trying to make artificial legs for himself. Maul's brother, Savage Opress, managed to retrieve Maul and only half of his lightsaber. Maul wielded the weapon against Obi-Wan in several rematches, then alongside the Darksaber against Palpatine. This weapon was eventually lost during Maul's escape from the Clone Troopers during Order 66.

Maul's second lightsaber produced two crimson-red blades, and the upper grip-guard resembled that of the Inquisitors' lightsabers, albeit broken and bent outward, and it is likely he took the weapon from an Inquisitor that he probably killed. He would hide the hilt by attaching a piece of wood to it, and pretending it was a walking stick, all the while masquerading as a feeble old man. It was destroyed in the final battle between Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi; cut in half by the same downward blow that killed Maul.
Mace Windu
Mace Windu's Lightsaber
Mace had two lightsabers, one with a more generic design, the other with a more intricate design. His signature purple lightsaber was built upon being appointed as a senior master of the Jedi Council and was decorated with electrum finish befitting his high status. The weapon also had a unique signature handgrip. The fate of the weapon is unknown' except that it was last seen falling out of a window down from Chancellor Palpatine's office after Windu's duel with Palpatine.
Palpatine
Palpatine's Lightsaber
Palpatine's lightsabers were designed based around the Sith Master's passion for antiquity. He created the main body from the light and lightsaber-resistant Phrik alloy and decorated them with golden Electrum metal, as Palpatine was also a patron of the arts and a master craftsman. He constructed two of these weapons and used them throughout his life as a Sith Master/the Dark Lord of the Sith until he was killed by the redeemed Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Palpatine rarely used his lightsabers unless he had no other choice, as he knew the weapons would mark him instantly as a Sith Master. Moreover, he believed Sith had grown beyond the need for lightsabers, and only wielded them as a way of mocking the Jedi. Both his lightsabers were small enough to hide up his sleeves, and he always kept one hidden inside a neuronium statue on his desk during his time as Supreme Chancellor. He rarely utilized these lightsabers in his time as Emperor, and they are believed to have been lost after his death aboard the second Death Star.
Ahsoka Tano
Ahsoka's first lightsabers

Ahsoka used this lightsaber in Form IV and Form V combat. She mainly used it in a reverse Shien style grip. Her master Anakin Skywalker temporarily dual-wielded both her lightsaber and his own against two super battle droids led by the notorious bounty hunter Cad Bane on a Munificent-class star frigate in the Devaron System in order to save her. He also used only it after Ahsoka let him borrow it to defend himself when his own lightsaber was taken by the Separatists during the Battle of Mon Cala. Ahsoka lost this lightsaber when she was dueling Barriss Offee on Coruscant. Though it was later returned to her by her master during her mission to capture Darth Maul on Mandalore, she left it behind to fake her death during Order 66.

At some point during the Clone Wars, Ahsoka construct a yellow-green-bladed shoto-style lightsaber to pair with her standard lightsaber and wielded it during many battles across the galaxy. Ahsoka lost this lightsaber when she was forced to go on the run; she dropped her shoto-style lightsaber when a rocket blast knocked her over. It was returned to her by Anakin Skywalker for her mission to capture Darth Maul on Mandalore, but left it behind to fake her death during the events of Order 66 alongside her blue lightsaber.

Ahsoka Tano's Second Lightsabers
During the events of Ahsoka, following her departure from the Jedi Order and set during rise of the Galactic Empire, Ahsoka constructed two new lightsabers, created from the inner components and crystals from the lightsaber of an Inquisitor called Sixth Brother, whom she killed and with the outer hilts made from materials of her choosing. The main lightsaber is of standard length while the other is a shoto-style lightsaber, similar to the ones she wielded during the Clone Wars except both handles are slightly curved, and emit white blades. The hum of these lightsabers is higher pitched and quieter than that of more traditional variants. Originally, both crystals were red from infection by the dark side of the Force, but Ahsoka turned them white by imbuing them with the light side of the Force. Ahsoka still carries these lightsabers.
Yoda
Yoda's Lightsaber

Yoda's constructed his lightsaber many years ago under the aegis of Professor Huyang. In keeping with Yoda's stature, the green-bladed weapon had a shorter-than-average hilt and shorter blade. It had a simple design, consisting of a studded chrome handle with black trim and an emitter shroud. It should be noted that Yoda never used the lightsaber much until he battled Dooku on Geonosis. Yoda lost it after his battle with Palpatine. Mas Amedda later pick it up after the battle.

Subsequently, Yoda didn't want to wield another lightsaber. After his death, the lightsaber ended up in the possession of his last Jedi apprentice, Luke Skywalker. Skywalker offered the saber to Grogu, a young member of Yoda's species who was being trained by Skywalker. Grogu had to make a choice, choose the lightsaber and continue on the Jedi path, or choose the armor of beskar made for him at the request of his Mandalorian friend Din Djarin and surrender to the bond he had with him, renouncing the Jedi.

Qui-Gon Jinn
Qui Gon Jinn's lightsaber
Qui-Gon built his lightsaber while under the apprenticeship of Dooku during the latter's tenure as a Jedi Master and utilized Form IV with it as his main fighting style. Elegantly built, the lightsaber had a scalloped hand grip. Qui-Gon would wield this lightsaber until his death at the hands of Darth Maul. Maul was cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi with the weapon as its last act, but unknowingly survived and returned during the Clone Wars. After the battle, Kenobi returned the weapon to the Jedi Temple.
Kit Fisto
Kit Fisto's Lightsaber
Kit Fisto built his lightsaber sometime before the the Clone Wars. The Jedi Master modified his lightsaber by using two kyber crystals charged by an ignition pulse split into two currents, this allowed the beam to energize fully submerged in water. He continued to wield it during the Mission to Vassek 3 and Battle of Mon Cala before his death at the hands of Sheev Palpatine.
Plo Koon
Plo Koon's Lightsaber
Plo Koon built his lightsaber in the decades before the Clone Wars, and would continue to wield it until his death during Order 66. Luke Skywalker's New Jedi Order used this very design as a rubric for the lightsabers they built, though it is unknown what happened to the weapons after Kylo Ren destroyed most of the New Jedi Order.
Asajj Ventress
Asajj Ventress Lightsaber
Asajj received her lightsabers from Count Dooku as a gift. They could join at the ends to make on double-bladed lightsaber like Darth Maul's. Asajj used them throughout the Clone Wars especially during her career as a bounty hunter until they were stolen by Barriss Offee. Asajj would never reclaim them, as she used a yellow-bladed lightsaber until her death at the hands of Count Dooku.
Caleb Dume/Kanan Jarrus
Kanan's Lightsaber hilt
When Caleb Dume was forced to keep his Jedi identity hidden by calling himself Kanan Jarrus, he had to conceal his lightsaber in a drawer where it remained for fourteen years, until Ezra found it. Kanan's lightsaber was specially modified to split into two pieces and reattach for easy concealment. Following Kanan's death, the weapon ended up in the hands of Governor Pryce. It was likely destroyed when the Imperial Dome on Lothal blew up.
The Grand Inquisitor
The Grand Inquisitor's Lightsaber
The Empire's Grand Inquisitor uses a double-bladed rotating lightsaber, which is designed to end battles quickly, efficiently, and with a minimum of effort. The Grand Inquisitor's lightsaber is equipped with several modes, such as the crescent-mode that keeps it single-bladed. There is also a disc-mode where a second blade is drawn, during so both blades can rotate across the disc. Its unique design serves to unnerve the Grand Inquisitor's enemies, particularly among the Jedi he hunts. It was destroyed by Kanan Jarrus using both his and Ezra Bridger's lightsabers.
Ezra Bridger
Ezra's-Lightsaber
Unlike a traditional lightsaber, Ezra's weapon is a lightsaber-blaster hybrid, allowing him to engage in lightsaber combat as well as firefights. The lightsaber blade is light and swift, which complimented Ezra's speed and size. The blaster component, which fired stun blasts, was built as a result of Ezra's lack of skill at deflecting blaster bolts with his blade.

At the heart of the lightsaber is a kyber crystal, which Ezra received in the Jedi Temple on Lothal. In addition to the crystal, the lightsaber was built out of a number of parts from different members of the Rebel crew of the Ghost. Kanan Jarrus had spare lightsaber parts that he had found over the years, Sabine Wren donated modulation circuits and an energy gate, Chopper donated a power cell and Hera Syndulla provided additional technology based on Ezra's specifications. Those specifications included a blade emitter shroud, handgrip ridges, a blade length adjuster, an activator, and a blaster barrel.

This weapon was destroyed by Darth Vader in Ezra's second duel against the Sith Lord.

Ezra's Second Lightsaber
Following the destruction of his first lightsaber, Ezra at some point constructed a new one that features a green blade. Unlike his previous lightsaber-blaster hybrid, his new lightsaber is more traditional in construction. It is vaguely similar in design to Luke Skywalker's second lightsaber and Obi-Wan Kenobi's third lightsaber. It's hum is somewhat deeper in pitch than traditionally for a lightsaber. Before disappearing with Grand Admiral Thrawn and the purrgil into hyperspace, Ezra gave his lightsaber to Sabine Wren. She made modifications that altered its appearance, essentially making it hers according to lightsaber expert and architect droid professor Master Huyang. Even Ezra held this viewpoint, telling her she should keep it, even when she attempted to return it. Although she opposed his stance on the matter, Ezra urged Sabine keep to the lightsaber as it now belonged to her.
After years of exile on Peridea, Ezra constructed a new lightsaber with parts supplied by Huyang. The design of his third lightsaber is similar to the lightsaber that belonged to his master, Kanan Jarrus, something that Ezra did intentionally as he tried to honor him. Containing a blue kyber crystal, the lightsaber also features the same type of emitter shroud that Kanan's lightsaber had.
Ren
The Ren (lightsaber)
This lightsaber once belonged to a man named Ren until it was stolen by his successor, who took the name after defeating him in combat. "Ren" then wielded this weapon as the leader of the Knights of Ren. He used this lightsaber on many journeys, including when confronted Luke Skywalker and his nephew and strongest apprentice, Ben Solo. Ben later became Kylo Ren after defeating Ren in combat by killing him with this weapon. He later killed his former friend Voe with this weapon and left it with the body.
Ben Solo/Kylo Ren
Kylo Ren's Lightsaber Hilt

Ben Solo constructed his lightsaber during his training with his uncle Luke Skywalker. It had a blue plasma blade, and a hilt with squared-off corners and geometric lines like his mother's saber. The hilt also had finned grips similar to his grandfather's Sith lightsaber.

Ben used this weapon while he was a Jedi apprentice in his uncle's academy. One night, when Ben was asleep in his hut, Luke had sensed his power being brought to the dark side by Snoke and activated his own lightsaber, attempting to kill his nephew. This caused Ben to wake up, force-grab his lightsaber, and activate it to prevent his uncle from doing so, before collapsing the hut.

Ben kept the weapon and modified it into his cross-guard lightsaber after turning to the dark side. His corrupted lightsaber, made from his old Jedi weapon, had a main red blade, and two smaller red blades that projected from the side of the weapon as a crossguard. The reason for the blade's unorthodox appearance came from the fact that the kyber crystal powering it was cracked and damaged during its master's use of the dark side of the Force to bleed the crystal.

As a result of the cracked crystal, the lightsaber blade became ragged and unstable, with the blade funneling like fire and static electricity instead of solidifying. It could barely contain the weapon's power, so it necessitated the use of vents and focusing crystal activators to funnel away the weapon's excess energy, creating the signature quillons (crossguards). The emitter shrouds for the quillons were a necessity to protect Ren's hands from his own weapon. The damaged crystal also gave the lightsaber a deep, growling hum that further made it unique and terrifying to behold. The lightsaber's hilt was based off an ancient design dating back thousands of years to the Scourge of Malachor, but unlike those, Ren's lightsaber was crudely built and slipshod in its design, but this was due to Kylo Ren's desire to made it easily reparable and menacing-looking.

Kylo utilized this weapon at the time he served Supreme Leader Snoke and the First Order. He used it to murder his father, Han Solo and during his duel with Finn and Rey on Starkiller Base. Later, he used it while fighting beside Rey against the Praetorian guards and to confront his uncle on Crait. He continued to wield the weapon while he was searching for Rey after he became the Supreme Leader of the First Order and used this saber during his last duel against her atop the remains of the second Death Star. In the aftermath of the duel, after being saved by Rey from his mortal injures and conversing with a vision of his father, he threw his lightsaber away in the ocean, reclaimed his identity of Ben Solo, and turned back to the light side.

Fifth Brother
Fifth-Brother's-Lightsaber
The Fifth Brother's lightsaber is similar in design to the Grand Inquisitor's lightsaber, but is somewhat larger with indents on the outer ring. It, like all Inquisitor lightsabers, could be used for flight as well as combat. It was destroyed by Ahsoka Tano.
Seventh Sister
Seventh-Sister's-Lightsaber
The Seventh Sister's lightsaber shares the basic disc-shaped design with the Grand Inquisitor and the Fifth Brother's lightsabers, with unique textures and curved points on the outer ring. It, like all Inquisitor lightsabers, was useful for flight as well as combat. The saber was probably destroyed when the Sith temple exploded.
Eighth Brother
Eighth Brother's Lightsaber
The Eight Brother's lightsaber shares the disc-shaped design of other Inquisitor lightsabers, and like them, could be used for flight as well as combat. Uniquely, its outer ring contained retractable saw teeth, and could be utilized when deactivated as a hand-held buzzsaw. It was later destroyed during Eighth Brother's duel with Kanan Jarrus, Maul, and Ahsoka Tano.
Tarre Vizsla
Darksaber
This one-of-a-kind lightsaber was created by Tarre Vizsla, the first Mandalorian ever inducted into the Jedi Order. Following his passing, the weapon was kept in the Coruscant Jedi Temple until it was stolen by members of House Vizsla prior to the Fall of the Old Republic. Death Watch leader, Pre Vizsla subsequently used it until Darth Maul seized control of Death Watch and Mandalore. Maul wielded it for a time and then placed it in the lair of the Nightsisters on Dathomir, where it was eventually found and claimed by Sabine Wren after Maul abandoned the location as a base. She would subsequently begin training to utilize it in battle under Kanan before passing it on to Bo-Katan Kryze, whom she considered the true ruler of Mandalore. Five years after the Battle of Endor, the weapon fell into the hands of Moff Gideon, a leader of an Imperial remnant.
Leia Organa
Leia's lightsaber
Leia constructed her own lightsaber during her Jedi training with her brother, Luke. Leia's blue colored lightsaber had curved metal grips around its midsection and the ringed end of the hilt resembled that of her brother's green-bladed lightsaber. As she sensed the death of her unborn child at the end of her Jedi path, Leia interrupted her training and Luke kept her lightsaber. After Ben's fall to the dark side, Luke went in exile to the First Jedi Temple on Ahch-To, where he secretly kept his sister's lightsaber for safekeeping in his hut. Rey returned to Ahch-To on Kylo Ren's TIE whisper, which she burned, wanting to exile herself as Luke did, until his Force spirit gave her his old X-Wing for her to fly to Exegol to defeat Emperor Palpatine with his father's and sister's lightsabers. After the Emperor's death, Rey buried both Anakin and Leia's lightsabers on Tatooine; retiring the weapon, as well as honoring the Skywalker family where their legacy began.
Rey
Rey's lightsaber
After the death of Palpatine, and the end of the war against the First Order and Sith Eternal, Rey buried both Anakin and Leia's lightsabers on Tatooine, and unveiled her own that she had been creating over the past year with parts from her quarterstaff. It contains a unique rotating activation switch, instead of the buttons or activation plates seen in other lightsabers, and the emitter flashes green and blue before becoming yellow when the weapon is ignited. The blocky shaped hilt was made from the end of her quaterstaff and it has a heavy solid armor that turns the lightsaber resistant to impact and overuse. She previously had plans to make it a double-bladed saber staff to fit into her preferred fighting style, but she opted to construct a single-bladed saber after having a vision of her dark self using a double-bladed lightsaber in the ruins of the second Death Star.
Trilla Suduri/Second Sister
Second Sister's lightsaber
After Trilla Suduri was captured by the Empire and turned to the dark side of the Force, she became known as the Second Sister and used a double bladed lightsaber with all the basics of Inquisitor lightsabers. Aurebesh writing is engraved on the wheel which reads twice "ASDFGHJKLQWERTYUIOPZXCVBNMAASDFGHJKLQWERTYUIOPZXCVBNM".
Masana Tide/Ninth Sister
Ninth Sister's lightsaber

The Ninth Sister originally utilized a saber that was similar in design to the Grand Inquisitor's, the only difference being a spike was present on each side of the wheel. It was used by Darth Vader during a skirmish on Cabarria after his lightsaber was destroyed by an ion grenade. At some point between 18 BBY and 14 BBY, the Ninth Sister replaced her original saber with one that had a more robust hilt, a wider emitter and a thicker wheel.

Like the Second Sister's lightsaber, Aurebesh writing is engraved on the wheel, which reads twice "ASDFGHJKLQWERTYUIOPZXCVBNMAASDFGHJKLQWERTYUIOPZXCVBNM".

Cal Kestis
Cal Kestis second Lightsaber

After damaging his previous weapon, Cal Kestis created this lightsaber by combining parts from Cere Junda's lightsaber and his late master Jaro Tapal's lightsaber.

Depa Billaba
Depa Billaba Lightsaber

Depa Billaba's lightsaber consisted of a solid metal cylinder ending in a tapered pommel and a multi-ringed emitter, the latter of which was enveloped by a diamond-shaped metal segment that wrapped entirely around the hilt. Billaba would wield her lightsaber during her time as a Jedi General until she perished during the execution of Order 66, where she used it to defend herself against her formerly loyal Clone Troopers whilst urging her Padawan, Caleb Dume, to flee until it was shot out of her hands.

Reva Sevander/Third Sister
Reva's Lightsaber

As the Jedi Hunter known as the Third Sister, Reva wielded a double-bladed Inquisitor lightsaber. It is similar in appearance to other double-bladed spinning lightsabers wielded the Inquisitors. However, unlike other Inquisitors who carry their lightsabers on their backs, the Third Sister kept hers hang on her right side. The saber is able to be split into two separate blades with the ringed emitter retracting at the sides so the hilt can extend and split apart.

Trivia[]

  • Mace Windu was the only character with a purple lightsaber because Samuel L. Jackson wanted his character to have a distinctive lightsaber, so when watching the big battles in the Star Wars films, he'd be able to find himself easily.[1]
  • In the climax of the Bonkers episode "Springtime for the Iguana", Crunchy Potato Chip dueled Roderick Lizzard with something very similar to a lightsaber.
  • The word "lightsaber" is never spoken out loud in either The Phantom Menace or The Rise of Skywalker, with characters instead describing them with other terms such as “laser sword” or simply “saber”. Coincidentally, these are chronologically the first and last films in the series, respectively.
  • In the According to Jim episode The Nanny-Cam, Andy plays with a mop pretending it's a lightsaber, it's in reference to both Star Wars and the viral youtube video Star Wars Kid.
  • In Star Wars: Visions, some of the lightsaber blades have katana styles to pay homage to their Japanese influences:
    • In "The Duel", the lightsabers are only activated by drawing them out of their scabbards;
    • In "The Twins", the lightsabers can reach extreme lengths that can even cut through very large objects;
    • In "Lop & Ochō", the lightsabers have character inscriptions on their blades. Like the Darksaber, one of these lightsabers is an important symbol to the Yasaburo Clan.
  • Hondo Ohnaka refers to lightsabers as "laser swords".
