The Lions, alongside Lionesses, are characters featured in the 2000 Disney live-action film Whispers: An Elephant's Tale. They are a pride of lions living in the savanna.
Background[]
Most of the lions seen in the film live in various parts of the African savanna. Although they do not have a consistent personality, they are shown to scan their surroundings like waiting for prey to pass by for them to go on a hunt for prey. Despite their hostile nature, lions are genuinely not evil but rather predators trying to fight to survive in the wild, as demonstrated by Groove's advice.
Role in the film[]
One lion is first seen yawning during sunrise in the African savanna while growing his mane in the beginning of the film, just as he wakes up.
As Whispers and Groove are walking across the forest, amongst the creatures they encounter across the dark are baboons, hyenas, and lions. Later when they leave the forest, Whispers mistakes the glowing eyes for baboons, which Groove warns them that there are lions lurking in the forest. The two elephants sneak past a lounging lioness, followed by a male lion drinking from a pool of water. As more lions stand close together, an owl looks at the elephants from above. Just as Whispers and Groove are walking across the forest, more lions prowl through a bush, which they were able to sneak past them in time. Three lionesses then appear during the daytime where they stalk a herd of Cape buffalo grazing on the savanna, just as one of the lionesses attacks a buffalo calf, only to be confronted by various adult buffalo, causing them to retreat.
Furthermore when Whispers tries to look for Groove, lionesses began to arrive and start to stalk him while walking alongside a stranger elephant. All of a sudden, the pride of lions began to stalk the elephants in an all-out attack. Throughout the ambush, Whispers finds Groove, who tells her to get out of the territory. Whispers tries to defend the elephant that he met, but Groove warns him that he is risking his life to save a stranger elephant from the lions; however, Groove decides to fight off the lions to save the elephant from getting killed. To this, they were able to save the elephant during the ambush. They do not appear again throughout the film.
Trivia[]
- The way most of the lions seen in the film attacking the elephants consist of lionesses reflects the way lionesses in real life do most of the hunting.
- During the part where the lions attack the unnamed stranger elephant, she insults them, "Lion king, my rump!". This is a reference to the 1994 Disney animated feature film The Lion King, although the way the elephant yells at them could be an indirect reference to either Mufasa, Scar, or Simba.
