"Lost and Found" is the second segment of the tenth episode of the Disney Channel animated series Kiff.
Synopsis[]
Kiff and Barry try to return a lost journal without exposing its deeply personal entries.
Plot[]
While walking outside, Kiff and Barry find a notebook on the ground. They turn to a random page in the notebook and after reading it, they realize that the notebook is actually a highly personal private journal. The two visit Table Town City Hall to deposit the journal in the lost and found room, but they learn that Glarbin has instituted a policy that all items not claimed by the end of the business day become property of the state, making them no longer technically lost; this keeps the number of lost items at zero, while also allowing state employees like Glarbin to use the items. Not wanting Glarbin to read the journal, Kiff and Barry decide to locate its owner themselves.
Kiff realizes that the journal likely contains information about its author's identity, but Barry is conscious of respecting the author's privacy, so she promises to only read the first page, which presumably has the author's name written on it. However, the name is smudged, forcing Kiff to turn to a different page for information. Though the page does not mention a name, Kiff manages to make out the scent of coffee on the notebook, so she and Barry visit Pawva's Java to see if the author might be one of the store's customers. Pawva offers to cross-reference the journal's handwriting against her customer ledger. She is so impressed by the author's writing and illustrations that she shows the journal to her customers, and while she cannot identify a match, she informs Kiff and Barry that the pages are signed "MDT". Kiff assumes that these are Miss Deer Teacher's initials, and that she is the journal's author.
Kiff and Barry visit Miss Deer Teacher in her classroom and give her the journal, but after reading it, she tells them that it is not hers. She is nonetheless impressed by its emotional depth and suggests that its author is Rob Sadly, an old college acquaintance of hers who wrote confessional poetry and was fond of mumbling the phrase "might destroy tomorrow" after writing his poems. When Kiff and Barry visit Sadly at his mattress store, however, he shows them that he indeed destroys his poems after writing them, which means the journal cannot be his. After some resistance from Barry, Kiff hands the journal to Sadly, who might recognize its author as another member of the journaling community, but Sadly is also unable to identify the author. Barry, who throughout the day has become increasingly frustrated by others reading the journal, takes the journal and storms out of the store.
Outside, Kiff apologizes to Barry for letting people read the journal, only to find Barry himself frantically flipping through its pages. Barry admits that he has been suppressing his urge to scour the journal for clues the entire time. He runs into the nearby park and loudly reads out passages from the journal, eventually attracting a large audience. Slent emerges from the crowd and identifies himself as the author of the journal, revealing that "MDT" stands for "my deepest thoughts".
Kiff and Barry apologize to Slent and explain that they were only trying to prevent the journal from becoming Glarbin's property, which causes the crowd to learn about Glarbin's lost and found policy. All the lost items in Glarbin's possession are then retrieved by their respective owners, which actually pleases Glarbin, as he can now report the percentage of returned items as 100%. Slent arrives at City Hall and reveals that he has received a lucrative book deal due to the widespread interest in his journal entries. He then presents Kiff and Barry with bags of money as tokens of his appreciation. The two politely decline, but when Slent offers to write an entry about them in his next book instead, they change their minds and accept the money.
