About four years before the Battle of Yavin, a surviving Jedi named Kanan Jarrus and his apprentice Ezra Bridger, went in search of the Jedi Temple for completing Ezra's training. They used the Force to pull out the entrance door to the Jedi Temple. Once inside Ezra noticed many skeletons, to which Kanan explained were Jedi Masters whose Padawans never returned after passing a piece to pass the test. Kanan stayed behind as Ezra entered a room where the door suddenly closed. Once inside Ezra saw many illusions which reflected his fear that he had to overcome in order to continue. Once he succeeded he briefly made contact with Jedi Master Yoda and found a kyber crystal. Kanan also came into contact with Yoda while he waited for Ezra
One year later, Kanan, Ezra, and Ahsoka Tano returned to the Jedi Temple to seek advice from Yoda. However, two Inquisitors, the Fifth Brother and the Seventh Sister, found the Jedi and also discovered the Jedi Temple. They succeeded in entering but was confronted by the spirit of the Grand Inquisitor and the Jedi Temple Guards while the three Jedi fled. Soon after that, Imperial forces led by Darth Vader arrived and secured the Jedi Temple. Vader entered the Jedi Temple and congratulated the two Inquisitors for their discovery and told them that his master, Palpatine would be very pleased.
A few years later, Ezra was informed by some loth-wolves that the Jedi Temple was in danger due to the Empire seeking special knowledge from within the Temple. With this information, Ezra, Sabine Wren, Hera Syndulla, Garazeb Orrelios, and Chopper traveled to the Jedi Temple by riding on the loth-wolves. Once they arrived at the Temple, they saw the Empire had an operation working at the Temple with the help of the Mining Guild, led by Imperial adviser, Veris Hydan. When Chopper reroutes Hyman's transmission from Coruscant, they discover Emperor Palpatine to be involved with the operation at the temple. Despite Hera's hesitation, she allows Ezra and Sabine to continue on with the mission. The two teens discover a mural at the temple that depicts the godlike beings of the planet Mortis-the Father, the Son, and the Daughter. Sabine analyzes the mural and discovers its figures' hands are in a position similar to an illustrated stoned tablet the loth-wolves gave them. She realizes the hands are configurations and the mural is a star map where she tells Ezra to figure out a way to open the temple by lining the configurations as she covers for him.
