Lutz is an air element who plays airball for the Windbreakers in the Cyclone Stadium. He is an athletic yet avid airball player who is a member of the Windbreakers, a team of airball players adored by many Element City residents, including Gale Cumulus. However, during a match between the Windbreakers and the Cropdusters, Lutz's team started to be at risk in losing to the Cropdusters, the Windbreakers' opposing team, during the game. However, to his fans' chant, Lutz became determined with a large amount of encouragement given by many Windbreakers fans and thanks to this, he was able to defeat the Cropdusters during a game, resulting in the Windbreakers to win, impressing the fans.
Physical appearance[]
Lutz sports a yellow texture all around his body. He often has a pair of pink cheeks which blush between both sides. Like most airball players, Lutz wears a green airball jersey with the "Windbreakers" logo on it while wearing a green sweatband around his head resembling that of a typical basketball player.
Role in the film[]
When Ember and Wade enter the Cyclone Stadium to negotiate with Gale about the Lumen family's business being shut down, Lutz is seen playing airball with the rest of the Windbreakers team members alongside various Cropdusters players. Throughout the game, Lutz's team is at the risk of being lost to the Cropdusters who are about to win as it is shown that the Cropdusters are scoring more points than the Windbreakers. Lutz himself is shown playing poorly, with Wade noting that it was due to him mom being sick. Just as Wade encourages Lutz to win, he tells the spectators to deliver an encouragement to him where various Windbreakers fans encourage Lutz to help win the game for them. Hearing his fans cheering for him, Lutz became determined enough to help his team win the game by scoring more points than the Cropdusters, resulting in the Windbreakers to win. Lutz does not appear again afterward.
Trivia[]
Lutz's name is a reference to a backward figure-skating jump while taking a full turn in the air and later another landing on the outside edge of the other skate.
His voice actor, Matt Yang King, also voiced Alan Ripple as well as an incidental earth pruner.
In the English version of the film during the part where Wade convinces the audience to encourage Lutz to win, the audience members hold individual signs containing letters that spell out "WE LOVE U LUTZ" to help Lutz's team win the game. For the foreign-language dub versions of the film, the letters on the signs were replaced with drawings of hearts and images of Lutz himself respectively, albeit some of them containing Lutz's name on it. This was probably done to avoid the need for adding additional signs that translate the fans' message.
It is unknown what Lutz's mother is sick with or how Wade found out about her illness.
