Luz Noceda is the main protagonist of the animated series The Owl House.
Background
She is a self-assured teenage human girl, who accidentally stumbles upon a portal that transports her to the Boiling Isles.
Upon arrival, Luz decides to make her dream of becoming a witch come a reality, after she befriends a witch named Eda and becomes her apprentice. This proves to be difficult due to Luz's lack of magical abilities as well as the local town's demons being very prejudiced towards humans which forces her to hide her real identity.
Personality
Luz is a very excitable young girl. With a high fascination for all things fantasy and a knack for adventure, Luz is very outgoing and willing to hop into anything thrown her way. She sometimes has trouble looking before she leaps, but always manages to somehow land on her feet. In "A Lying Witch and a Warden", Luz describes herself as someone who enjoys "editing anime clips to music and reading fantasy books with convoluted backstories" while in "The First Day", her aura is described as "strong and silly like a baby's laughter".
Physical appearance
Luz is a Dominican-American fourteen-year-old girl with tan skin, dark, short titian hair, and hazel-brown eyes. Her clothing consists of a pair of black earrings, a white-and-indigo hoodie with cat ears attached to the hood, short jean-shorts, dark gray leggings, and a pair of white slip-on shoes. Her nightwear consists of a light gray sleeveless top, purple shorts with an amber moon and star, and white-and-indigo socks. When attending Hexside Academy of Magic and Demonics, she wears the standard uniform but with multi-colored sleeves and leggings as she is studying all the tracks in the school.
Between the pilot and the actual series, Luz initially wore an indigo and white striped t-shirt and black capri pants.
Powers and abilities
- Magic: Since Luz lacks any natural magical abilities and has no magic sac attached to her heart, she had to learn magic a different way. In "The Intruder", she learns that when casting the Spell Circle there is a glyph pattern that needs to be included, which can be seen for a brief moment. By drawing a specific glyph within the circle and giving it a tap, she can cast spells.
- Light spell: Creates an illuminating orb of light and is the first spell Luz learns. To cast this spell, she needs to draw a large triangle in the spell circle with a smaller triangle and circle on top. Down the middle a long line with two smaller lines across, side by side in the triangle.
- Ice spell: Conjures ice. To cast this spell, Luz needs to draw a diamond with a line down the center, sat on another line across the bottom of the spell circle. A curved line must be drawn across the diamond and sometimes a smaller diamond is included at the bottom.
- Plant spell: At some point in "Enchanting Grom Fright", Luz learns how to create plants. To cast this spell, Luz must draw a plant like glyph.
- Fire spell: Conjures fire by drawing a larger circle at the bottom of the spell circle with a dot in the center. On top, Luz must draw a smaller circle with a curved triangle on top. Another curved triangle is also included on top of the bigger circle which goes over the smaller circle. Luz first learnt this spell during a Grudgby match against Boscha.
Relationships
Eda Clawthorne

Luz admires Eda. Upon first meeting, she was immediately awestruck by her appearance and personality, believing that she was the greatest person ever. Since being taken under her wing, Luz has voiced nothing but pleasure and appreciation for her, borderlining on infatuation. In "The Intruder", she excitedly states that she admires Eda going as far as to describe her as being "magical, sassy, [and] surprisingly foxy for her age". As the series progresses, Luz begins to see some of Eda's flaws, but unlike others, she does not hold them against her and instead wants to help her resolve some of them. To her, Eda is not just a teacher, but almost a surrogate mother of sorts. Luz has shown to not agree with some of Eda's wisdom and will sometimes rebel against her, but by the end of the episode, learns that she is just trying to protect her from making mistakes that she, presumably, has made in the past. In "Hooty's Moving Hassle", Luz is shown to be afraid of Eda's judgment and tries to stick to her rules so as not to be horribly punished. In "Enchanting Grom Fright", Luz claims that one of her biggest fears is to continuously be babied and looked down upon by Eda and wants to show that she can be independent. In "Young Blood, Old Souls", Luz tells Eda that she loves her, in a platonic way; showing that she respects her a great deal.

Luz immediately became sympathetic to Willow upon her first encounter. Unlike Amity, Luz is very supportive of her endeavors as a witch in training and finds her gifts fantastic. Due to Luz being an extrovert, she is able to bring Willow out of her shell and have her accept her latent plant magic abilities. Luz can sometimes be forceful with Willow, albeit unintentionally, but is understanding whenever she points this out.
Gus Porter
Luz finds Gus amusing, mostly because he thinks that she is unique for being a human. She treats him like a little brother and, much like with Willow, looks out for his well-being. In "Something Ventured, Someone Framed", Luz begins to admire Gus' rather advanced illusion magic and compliments him on his abilities.
Amity Blight

Luz never intentionally wants to rival Amity, but their clashing personalities, as well as the constant rising situations, pushes her to challenge her behavior. Luz dislikes Amity's snobbish view of witches and wants to prove her wrong by showing that anyone is capable of mastering magical feats. However, Luz does not want to antagonize her and instead just wants her to accept her for who she is. In "Covention", it is implied that the two of them are beginning to reach an understanding of sorts. In "Lost in Language", Luz has a better grasp of Amity's issues and now openly wants to befriend her, which seems close once she decides to lend her copy of The Good Witch Azura to her. In "Adventures in the Elements", Luz and Amity are on much better terms, albeit still awkward with one another and by "Enchanting Grom Fright", the two are amicable to one another. Luz is apparently oblivious of the fact that Amity has a crush on her now as seen in "Wing It Like Witches".
Camila Noceda
Luz loves her mother and she in turn loves her daughter unconditionally. However, this does not mean that their relationship is perfect. It is quite apparent that Luz feels pressured by Camila to be more uniform with society; giving her a pamphlet for Reality Check Summer Camp to "think inside the box". All she wants is for her mother to understand her and her hobbies. In "Enchanting Grom Fright", Luz openly admits that she is not ready for her mother to know of her magic witch training, with her finding out and immediately disapproving being her biggest fear. Luz calmly assures her mother that she is fine however, knowing that she will tell her one day.

- Her name means "light" in Spanish and Portuguese.
- It is also pronounced as "/luːz/ LOOZ".
- "Noceda" sounds like "no ceda (pronounced /ˈnəʊsɛɪdə/ NOH-say-də)" or "no cede (pronounced /ˈnəʊseɪdɛ/ NOH-say-deh)", which is Spanish for "doesn't give in", which describes her feisty, determined spirit.
- Together her name could simplistically mean "a light that does not go out".
- Luz is named after Dana Terrace's friend, Luz Batista, who works as a story artist and consultant for the show.
- In "A Lying Witch and a Warden", Luz states that she likes to edit anime clips to music. This implies that she is an Otaku, a person who is obsessed with Japanese culture, particularly anime.
- Luz can flip her eyelids inside out.
- Luz loves to stand in the rain.
- Luz has similar traits to Atsuko "Akko" Kagari from the anime series Little Witch Academia. Both desire to become witches despite having non-magical backgrounds, and like Akko, who is a fan of a witch named Shiny Chariot, Luz is a fan of a witch character named Azura. The Exception being Ursula (Shiny Chariot) is a real person in that anime.
- Luz is similar to Anne Boonchuy from Amphibia as they were both transported to different dimensions. However, unlike Anne, Luz wasn't stuck there and had the choice to leave if she wanted to, prior to "Young Blood, Old Souls".
- Luz can speak both English and Spanish.
- Luz is afraid of cats with human faces, people online who want to debate and apparently dairy products as she is lactose intolerant. Additionally, she is afraid of Eda's overall judgement of her as well as her mother discovering and disapproving of her time in the Boiling Isles.
- Dana Terrace hinted on Twitter that Luz may not be heterosexual.[3] She later confirmed that Luz is bisexual.[4]
- If the show is set in the year it premiered (2020) and Luz is 14 it would place her being born in 2006, possibly even 2005.
