Maddox Hatter is a supporting character from Descendants: The Rise of Red. He is the son of the Mad Hatter, and the close friend and tutor of Red.[1]

Maddox Hatter is an inquisitive and irrepressibly curious science teacher, tutor and friend of Red. Maddox is also more grounded, thoughtful and caring unlike his father.

Maddox cut a striking figure in his plaid top hat, purple hair, and olive-green leather trench coat worn on top of a pin-striped wool suit.

Descendants: The Rise of Red[]
After Red runs avoiding the Crimson Army, Maddox took her to his room by his machinery, where he tells her that if she continues like this he won't always be able to save her. Red tells him what she can do while being imprisoned in Wonderland, and feeling like a lost cause, to which Maddox tells her that it is not like that, and that he worries about her future. After telling him that it's not easy having a controlling mother, Maddox tells her that the Queen wasn't always like this, and shows her his time machine: a Pocket Watch. But he warns her that changing the time structure can be dangerous, and sees that Red would have to use it when she was more mature, since he cares about her. After which, Red hugs him, thanking him, and upon hearing that the guards are still looking for the fugitive who was vandalizing the streets, Maddox sends her through a tube to her room, while he continues drinking tea.
In the morning, he alerts the Queen of Hearts of the arrival of a letter as a Royal Delivery. After reading that it is an invitation for Red to become a student at Auradon Prep, Maddox tells Red that she may have a future after all, traveling to Auradon and leaving Wonderland, but Red assumes that her mother will refuse. However, the Queen accepts, much to Red and Maddox's surprise.

Beyond the Isle of the Lost: A Descendants Novel[]
Maddox teaches a science class at Wonderland High, where Red is one of his students. He notices Red seems distracted and questions if she's okay. Maddox introduces a new student, Chester, to the class and asks Red to be Chester's lab partner. He ends the class after Red and Chester finish their work. Later, Maddox announces that there will be no homework that day, raising Red's suspicions. In another class session, Maddox teaches quantum physics. He asks Chester about his location during the quantum physics lesson, telling him that while his answer was perfect, it could have been more detailed. Maddox moves to the chalkboard to continue his lesson. He suggests that while a person can be invited to an "un-party", they wouldn't be able to attend without full information, such as knowing the time. When Red gives a perfect answer to a question, Maddox praises her for it.

According to Descendants: The World of Auradon: Royals and Villains, Maddox Hatter isn't very close to his father, but Maddox definitely got his eccentric creativity and out-of-the-box thinking from his dad.

Maddox is Red's tutor and friend. He introduced to her the pocket watch that allows time travel, but decided against giving it to her for fear that she wasn't ready for the repercussions of changing the fabric of time, and she stole it from him. He always encourages her to believe in her future.
