Let's go find Tommy
Agatha to Billy

"Maiden Mother Crone" is the final episode of the miniseries Agatha All Along. It premiered on October 30, 2024, along with "Follow Me My Friend / To Glory at the End".

Synospis[]

The truth about Agatha Harkness and the Witches' Road.

Plot[]

In 1750, a pregnant Agatha is painfully giving birth to her son Nicolas Scratch and Death appears before her. Agatha pleads with Rio not to take her son, which she agrees but can only give her limited time with him and he is born as a sick baby. Several years pass, Agatha has taught Nicholas to help her lure in other witches, so she absorb their powers, although Nicholas does expresses reluctance towards what Agatha does, often questioning why she needs to do so. As the two travel, they come up with the original Ballad of the Witches' Road. One night, Nicholas wakes up and is greeted by Rio as Death and his soul goes with her, kissing his mother one final time. Agatha wakes up the next morning to find her son dead and cries in grief. Agatha is then approached by another witch, who has heard the Ballad and thinks the road is real, asking Agatha to show it to her. Agatha spends the next couple of centuries, up to modern day, luring in other witches through the Ballad, saying she can take them to the Witches' Road, before absorbing their powers when they attack her for deceiving them.

Back home, Billy is being haunted by Agatha's ghost. It is here that Billy realizes the Witches' Road is not real and he created the road by accident. Agatha admits his ability to do so is when she realized that Billy was Wanda's son. Billy is shocked and starts to freak out when he realizes that this means he is unintentionally the reason Alice, Sharon and Lilia are dead. Agatha assures him that technically, she killed Alice, Lilia chose to sacrifice herself to save them from the Salem Seven, and he actually saved a life, as Jennifer Kale survived the road, instead of Agatha killing her from the start.

Billy returns to Westview, and searches Agatha's house for her locket as well as his spell book. Billy reveals he is going to cast a spell to banish Agatha to the afterlife. Agatha begs him not to, not being prepared to face her son and having him see what she has become. Billy agrees to work with Agatha as she offers to help him find Tommy, Agatha also finding herself able to pick up her locket in her ghost form. Billy seals off the entrance to the Witches' Road with an epitaph tribute to their fallen Coven members, and heads off with Agatha to find Tommy.

Trivia[]

  • This episode is part two of the season finale. It premiered on the same night of the previous episode.
  • Agatha's son, Nicholas Scratch, is shown for the first time and it is revealed how he died. His voice was previously heard in "Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power".
  • Agatha appears to Billy in ghost form following her death last episode, much like her mother in "Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power".
    • Agatha returning as a ghost makes her the first deceased protagonist of any Marvel show to do this. It also makes her the first protagonist overall in the MCU to return as a ghost.
  • The way Jennifer flies out of Westview is very similar to how Wanda left the town at the end of WandaVision.
  • Agatha's ghost form is based on her comic book counterpart, who is an old lady. Kathryn Hahn wore a white wig as Ghost Agatha rather than using CGI on her hair.
  • During the credits, the forest imagery is replaced by images of Billy's bedroom. This represents how the Witches' Road, seen during the series, was actually created by him, subconsciously based around items in his bedroom.
  • The reveal that the Witches' Road was not real was actually hinted at in the series premiere. When Agatha told Teen that it didn't exist, Billy didn't believe her, thinking she was lying. However, this episode proved that Agatha wasn't lying at the time as it didn't actually exist until Billy unintentionally created the road, as revealed in this episode.
  • The opening scene in 1750 take place 57 years after Agatha was put on trial by her mother and the Salemites, which took place in 1693, shown in the WandaVision episode "Previously On".
  • The bell that Nicholas steals is the same one Agatha used in episode 2 to start the Ballad of the Witches' Road.
  • The way Agatha breaks the fourth wall is like when Wanda did the same when she possessed her 838 self's body in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
  • The title not only references the Ballad of the Witches' Road, but also the broach Agatha has been wearing throughout the show and what she stole from her mother's corpse, during the Salem witch trials in 1693.
