The Maiden in barrel is a character from the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at the Disney Parks.
History[]
Background[]
The young woman was forced to conceal herself in a barrel whilst being pursued by an amorous pirate, who stole her petticoat.
Development[]
The Maiden in barrel is one of the characters created for the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction which first opened at Disneyland in 1967. She was displayed in the Isla Tesoro scene with pirates chasing maidens, while she hides from the Pooped Pirate.
Due to the success of the attraction at Disneyland, the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction was later constructed at Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland, and Disneyland Paris, still featuring the Maiden in it.
Formerly in the Disneyland version of the attraction, in 1996 she was replaced with a cat in a barrel for the Pooped Pirate, now known as the Gluttonous Pirate, for the food scene when the Gluttonous Pirate is eating various types of food.
In the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction, in 1994 her hair was now blonde, and she was holding a treasure chest for the Pooped Pirate, now known as the Buccaneer, for the scene when the Buccaneer is holding a treasure map and key. Then for the post-2006 revamp of the Florida version, she was replaced by Jack Sparrow.
In the Tokyo Disneyland version, in 2007, she was replaced by Jack Sparrow for the Pooped Pirate, now known as the Buccaneer, for the new scene where he is holding a treasure map and key, while he laughs about Jack Sparrow as he is hiding in a barrel.
In the Disneyland Paris version, in 2017, she was replaced by Jack Sparrow.
