"Mama's Girl" is the third episode of the second season of Recess.

Synopsis[]

Spinelli accidentally calls Miss Grotke "Mama" when she warns her that she was about to step in a mud puddle in front of the whole playground and is teased about it.

Plot[]

After class, Spinelli is called by Miss Grotke to speak with her. Contrary to Spinelli's concern, Miss Grotke praises Spinelli for her recent book report and just wanted to commend her. Spinelli asks that she keep this between the two of them before thanking her. Upon coming out to recess, Spinelli tells her friends not to worry about what happened and for them all to return to playing. As they are doing so, Miss Grotke walks out and nearly steps in a mud puddle. Spinelli tells her to watch out, but accidentally calls her "mama", causing everyone, including the Gang and Miss Finster, to laugh at her blunder and call her "mama's girl".

Spinelli proceeds to get mocked by everyone at school, including her friends and goes home feeling humiliated. She attempts to stay home the next day, but her mom forces her to go. Seeing that no one is letting up from her mistake, the Gang take it upon themselves to try and take the heat off of her. They attempt to have Randall call Miss Finster mama, but he stutters and is unable to help her from falling into a mud puddle. They next attempt to pin a note to Principal Prickly's back for people to call her "daddy", but Gus chooses to write in cursive and it is illegible. Gretchen utilizes subliminal messaging via the loudspeakers, but this too fails.

The Gang come into class to see a mocking chalk drawing on the blackboard. As Miss Grotke tries to talk the children down about bullying, T.J. finally stands up and calls her mama. Soon, the rest of the gang follows suit, which convinces the rest of the class to also call her mama, relieving Spinelli of her past humiliation. Spinelli later thanks the Gang for sticking up for her and fixing her reputation. However, Gretchen is confused as to why the subliminal messaging did not work. As she ponders this, Prickly and Finster leave for the day and accidentally call each other mommy and daddy.
