- “A wicked witch can do the impossible! But you weren't even able to kill Snow White... a weak and innocent child!”
- ―Mammona scolds Queen Grimhilde[src]
Mammona is a character created by Guido Martina and Romano Scarpa, first appearing in the comic story "Menace of the Witch's Ruby" in 1953 (translated and collected by Fantagraphics in 2017). She is the empress of all witches and an adversary of Snow White.
In her first appearance, Mammona attends the centennial gathering of witches where other witches and sorceresses pay tribute to the Witch Empress. Queen Grimhilde is among the witches in attendance, but Mammona points out her failure to kill Snow White. Mammona demands Grimhilde do something evil in order to restore her powerful magic powers. If she fails, Mammona will have to punish Grimhilde according to "infernal law". She gifts Queen Grimhilde with the mystical Green Flame Ruby, and tasks her with turning the red gem green. In order to do so, she needs a tear of despair from Snow White within three days. If she fails, Grimhilde will be transformed into a horsehair broom to serve them, as suggested by fellow witches Raven and Scabra.
When Queen Grimhilde ultimately fails to turn the Green Flame Ruby from red to green, Mammona condemns her into becoming a broom, summoning her back to the woods.
Mammona later appears in 1961's Topolino story, "I Sette Nani e le lucciole della salvezza".
