Manuel is a character featured in the 2020 Disney+ original film Black Beauty.
Background[]
Manuel is a stable boy who works at a horse stable at New York. He is shown to follow orders whenever his fellow workers tell him to get to work, especially in taking care of the horses. However, he suddenly begins to feel a heart for Black Beauty, especially when it comes to her conditions of feeling mistreated by workers for an illegal company. He occasionally uses the telephone to have a private conversation with someone where there are no other workers present, such as the case of calling the police to arrest the workers of an illegal company that mistreats horses.
In addition to speaking words in English, Manuel is also bilingual as he occasionally speaks words in Spanish, implying that he is of Latin American roots. With respect to Beauty's appearance, Manuel would occasionally call her "hermosa" (meaning "beautiful" in Spanish), which Manuel finds her beautiful - although he still calls her "Lady".
Role in the film[]
Manuel is first seen putting Black Beauty in her stable, bidding her a good night, treating her kindly. He later enters Beauty's pen planning to give her food just before another worker privately talks to someone. Manuel reads an article about the incident Beauty had earlier, understanding her emotions, planning to send her to a better place just as one of the workers tells him to go back to work. After the workers leave, Manuel then calls the police to arrest the workers of the illegal company that mistreats horses, which they were able to arrest them for animal cruelty just before Jo arrives. Just as Jo reunites with Beauty, Manuel is last seen bidding Beauty a farewell, just as John Manly sends Beauty back to Birtwick, which was saved from bankruptcy.
