Markl is the apprentice of Howl and the tritagonist in Studio Ghibli's film Howl's Moving Castle.

Personality[]
Markl is very obedient, doing what he is being told. Also he gives pointers to Sophie when she first arrived, making sure to keep her out of trouble.
Physical appearance[]
Markl has ginger hair and brown eyes. He wears a green vest and he disguises himself as an old man wizard.

Sophie Hatters[]
At first, Markl detests Sophie, thinking she was a witch and also for barging into Howl's castle. But he quickly grows to appreciate her. When Sophie's mother visits Sophie, Markl insist Sophie not to leave because everyone living in the castle is now a family to him.
Trivia[]
- In the book, Howl's apprentice is named Michael who is described as "a tall, dark boy with a pleasant, open sort of face, and he was respectively dressed." He is also the first person in the castle Sophie interacts with, instead of Calcifer.
- It's possible that the reason for the character's name change is because Michael (Maikeru, マイケル) and Markl (Marukuru, マルクル) are phonetically similar. Studio Ghibli most likely altered the name so that it is easier for Japanese audiences to remember.
