The Master Bolt is the main tool and weapon owned by Zeus. It was stolen by Luke Castellan, but returned to him by Percy Jackson.
Description[]
The Master Bolt is the primary tool used by Zeus. It is made of bronze and, fittingly, is in the shape of a lightning bolt. While the edges are clean, almost blade like, the middle section has a textured design to it. When activated, the entire bolt, or rather its ends, glows a bright lightning blue and is capable of bringing an immense force of energy down.
Appearance[]
The Master Bolt was stolen by Luke Castellan who, presumably, used Hades' Helm of Darkness to do so. It was then given to Ares for safekeeping. Due to the tensity of the gods, Zeus was lead to believe that Poseidon, or rather his son Percy Jackson was behind the theft. Percy would be sent by Chiron and Dionysus to go on a quest to retrieve it with Annabeth Chase and Grover Underwood tagging along on his quest.
The trio would run into Ares who would use the cover of aiding them to hide the Master Bolt among their things as they journeyed away. Luke, having given the group a pair of flying shoes from his father Hermes, hoped that when they reached the Underworld, that the shoes would pull Percy into the Pit of Tartarus so that the Master Bolt could free Kronos. However, Percy ended up giving the shoes to Grover, and would save him at the last minute, resulting in the two of them finding the Bolt and realizing that Hades was not behind the theft, as they had initially thought.
Upon defeating Ares, Percy would personally take the Bolt back to Zeus who, in curt graciousness, took it back, but insisted on the war between him and Poseidon continue as he missed the due date. Percy would scold Zeus for his callousness, causing him to use the Bolt on Percy, but is stopped by Poseidon who surrenders for the sake of his son. Zeus reluctantly agrees and takes the Bolt back with him, adding that he does not want to see Percy ever again.
Trivia[]
- In the book, the Master Bolt was described as being a bronze cylinder with two ends that glow into the shape of the traditional lightning bolt shape. The series changes it to be lightning bolt shaped already, while the film adaptation made it a glowing bolt.
- Despite promotional posters depicting Percy wielding the Master Bolt, he never actually uses it in the series, as was the case in the book, as this would have defeated the whole purpose of the story. The feature film did the same thing and some book cover editions show him using it as well, implying that this was simply a marketing tactic to showcase the power of the Master Bolt.
