- “Do you know who Maui is? Only the greatest demigod in all the pacific islands!”
- ―Maui to Moana
Maui is the deuteragonist of Disney's upcoming 2016 animated feature film, Moana.
Background
Maui is a demigod of South Pacific legend. Born a human, and raised by gods, Maui is equipped with shapeshifting abilities and a giant magical hook. With his magical hook he slows down the Sun, pulls islands out of the sea and battles monsters. He also has multiple tattoos across his body, which are animated and move about his skin. Despite his status, Maui finds himself torn between the worlds of humanity and deity, feeling "stuck in the middle". Nevertheless, he finds enjoyment in showcasing his godlike abilities to others.[1]
Maui will also join Moana on her travels.
Trivia
- Maui's fish hook can be seen as silhouetted artwork on the rear end of Finnick's van in the film Zootopia.
- A Disney INFINITY figure of Maui was planned for release, but was cancelled following the game's discontinuation.[2]
