"Maybe" is the first song sung in Disney's Annie (1999 film). The lyrics were written by Martin Charnin, and the song was written by Charles Strouse. It is sung by Alicia Morton as Annie, while she tucks in the other orphan girls. The song is a lullaby. After reading a letter left to her by her estranged parents, she sings about what she imagines her parents to be like. In the end, she only cares about them coming back for her someday.

Plot

Annie comforts young orphan Molly, who recently had a nightmare of her parents. Annie soothes her by reading her a letter from her parents, promising her that someday they'll come back for her. Molly soon falls back asleep, and Annie tucks in the orphan girls as she sings about her lost parents.

Lyrics

Annie:

Maybe far away
Or maybe real nearby
He may be pouring her coffee
She may be straightening his tie!

Maybe in a house
All hidden by a hill
She's sitting playing the piano
He's sitting paying a bill!

Betcha they're young
Betcha they're smart
Bet they collect things
Like ashtrays, and art!

Betcha they're good
Why shouldn't they be?
Their one mistake
Was giving up me!

So maybe now it's time,
And maybe when I wake
They'll be there calling me baby
Maybe

Betcha he reads
Betcha she sews
Maybe she's made me
A closet of clothes!

Maybe they're strict
As straight as a line
don't really care
As long as they're mine!

So maybe now this prayer's
The last one of it's kind
Won't you please come get your baby
Maybe
