"Maybe" is the first song sung in the film, Annie. It was written by Charles Strouse and the lyrics were written by Martin Charnin. It is sung by Annie, while she tucks the other orphans in. It's a lullaby. After reading a letter left to her by her estranged parents, she sings about what she imagines them to be like. In the end, she only cares about them coming back for her someday.

Plot

Annie comforts Molly, who recently had a nightmare about her parents. Annie soothes her by reading her a letter from hers, promising her that someday they'll come back for her. She soon goes back to sleep, and Annie tucks the other orphans in as she sings about her lost parents.

Lyrics

Annie:
Maybe far away
Or maybe real nearby
He may be pouring her coffee
She may be straightening his tie!

Maybe in a house
All hidden by a hill
She's sitting playing the piano
He's sitting paying a bill!

Betcha they're young
Betcha they're smart
Bet they collect things
Like ashtrays, and art!

Betcha they're good
Why shouldn't they be?
Their one mistake
Was giving up me!

So maybe now it's time,
And maybe when I wake
They'll be there calling me baby
Maybe

Betcha he reads
Betcha she sews
Maybe she's made me
A closet of clothes!

Maybe they're strict
As straight as a line
Don't really care
As long as they're mine!

So maybe now this prayer's
The last one of its kind
Won't you please come get your baby
Maybe
