I go by a lot of names, some of them are a bit cruel and hurtful to me. But I like you, Riri, so uh....you can call me.....Mephisto.
―Mephisto to Riri Williams[src]

Mephisto is a Marvel Comics supervillain who appears in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He first appears in the series Ironheart and is portrayed by Sacha Baron Cohen.

This version of Mephisto was created by Stan Lee and Jerry Robinson.

Background[]

Mephisto is the Devil of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, he is unrelated to the entity that empowers Johnny Blaze and Robbie Reyes. It's unknown how old Mephisto is, but he appears to be many centuries old as he is a demon who does not age physically. At some point in time, he had an encounter with Dormammu and has made deals with many people over the years.

Powers[]

  • Soul Sucking: Mephisto is able to kill and gain people's souls by sucking their souls from their body, which sends them to Hell.
  • Voice Changing: When Mephisto formally introduces himself to Riri, he uses a more demonic voice that echoes when he says his name or Dormammu's.
  • Manipulation: He is able to easily pursuade people into making a deal with them, which leads to them trading their souls, which means they would slowly die.
  • Mind Reading: Without Riri saying a word, Mephisto is able to understand that she wants her best friend back, by reading her mind.

Appearances[]

The Avengers[]

While Mephisto does not appear in the film, he was enlisted to aid S.H.I.E.L.D. as they wished to harness the power of Tesseract. While studying the cube, Mephisto proposed that the Tesseract could be as powerful as the Infinity Stones.

Agatha All Along[]

They say no one knows what happened to him. They say he might be dead. Others say he might be a demon... or an agent of Mephisto.
Jennifer Kale[src]

While Mephisto does not appear in the series, he is mentioned by Jennifer Kale in "Through Many Miles / Of Tricks and Trials". She tells Teen about Agatha's background and that she lost her son in exchange of the Darkhold. Jennifer suggests that Nicholas could be an agent of Mephisto although she is not fully sure.

Ironheart[]

Mephisto makes his live action debut in the final episode of the series, "The Past Is the Past". He makes a deal with Parker Robbins and later threatens him. Mephisto compares Parker to William Shakespeare, who is revealed to be in Hell after making a deal with Mephisto. Mephisto threatens to replace Parker with someone else, but considers giving him more power if he holds into the hood.

After fighting Parker as the Hood, Riri finds herself in the pizza parlor where Mephisto is sitting. He offers her some pizza and tells her that he has been watching her, admiring her work. He reveals he has made a deal with several people, with Riri now being one of them, who makes a deal to bring her best friend, Natalie, back to life. However, unknown to Riri, she has offered her soul to Mephisto in exchange for her friend to come back.

Trivia[]

  • In the comics, Mephisto makes deals with several Marvel Cinematic Universe characters, which is not yet seen in the MCU (although it is possible he did so off-screen). The characters include:
  • While he does not appear in his comic book form in Ironheart, the reflection on the teaspoon does show it.
  • He was first referenced in the first Avengers film as an article mentioned his name and that he had history with the Tessaract.
  • This is the second live-action incarnation of Mephisto, the first being played by Peter Fonda and Ciarán Hinds in the original Ghost Rider duology, which is not produced by Disney.
  • According to the finale of Ironheart, Mephisto made a deal with William Shakespeare, meaning Mephisto has been around since the 16th century, making him over 500 years old by the time he encounters Riri Williams, in 2025.
