Merbabies is a short from the Silly Symphonies series that was released on December 9, 1938. It and Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore are the only two Disney shorts to be outsourced to another studio (this one because Disney borrowed animators from MGM to finish Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs). In the case of Merbabies, it would be made by Rudolf Ising and Hugh Harman over at MGM, who worked with Walt in the early years.

Synopsis

Similar to Water Babies, redheaded 'merbabies' materialize out of the crashing surf and proceed to the sea floor where they conduct a circus along with a variety of sea creatures. Monstro makes a cameo appearance in this short.

Notes

Two other shorts were made at Disney's studio, [Pipe Dreams] and [The Little Bantamweight], but Metro Goldwyn Mayer bought the copyrights for these two from Disney and released them as part of their wp:Happy Harmonies series. These two were the last two shorts in the Happy Harmonies series before MGM terminated Hugh Harman and Rudolf Ising in 1937.[1]
