Many merpeople featured in the film are featured as background characters and have no given names. Like all the mythical creatures, merpeople lived in a world where magic once existed before adapting to modern technology.

In a teaser trailer for the film, a mermaid can be seen drinking juice in an inflatable pool taking a selfie of herself. This was also present in the final version of the film.
