Merrylegs is a character featured in the 2020 Disney+ original film Black Beauty.
Background[]
Merrylegs is one of the two horses brought to Black Beauty to accompany her at the Birtwick Stables. According to Beauty, she describes him as the funniest horse that she ever saw after Beauty was introduced to Ginger. He would occasionally accompany Black Beauty in her pen to give her company, which reminds her of her family in the wild. However, after Black Beauty finally returned to Birtwick that was saved from a fire, it is shown that Merrylegs started a new family by having a baby foal.
Role in the film[]
Merrylegs is one of the two horses at Birtwick whom Black Beauty describes as the funniest horse she has ever seen after Beauty was introduced to Ginger. Eventually, he, Beauty, and Ginger became friends, reminding Beauty of the other horses she had in the wild, giving her company. The next day, Merrylegs chases James in Beauty's pen which Beauty did the other day, alongside Ginger and Beauty herself.
Later after Jo Green began to ride on Black Beauty, her uncle John suggests Jo to ride on Merrylegs instead, due to him being a domestic horse. One night, after a fire broke out in Birtwick, Merrylegs was one of the horses who were surrounded by a fire in the Stables, leading Jo to rescue Beauty, Merrylegs, Ginger, and all the other horses trapped by the fire. Jo was able to rescue Merrylegs and the other horses. During the moment where Beauty spends her last moments with Ginger before she passes away, the latter tells Beauty that she and Merrylegs were the only friends she ever had just before Ginger passes away shortly. Later at the end of the film, it is revealed that Merrylegs survived and is shown to have started a new family, even after Birtwick was saved after Beauty returned to the place where she was meant to be.
