"Mighty Merc" is the second segment of the fifth episode of Miles from Tomorrowland. It premiered on February 13, 2015 alongside "Catch That IOTA!".
Plot[]
M.E.R.C. heads across the hallway to wake up Miles from his sleep. He then takes him to see the outside of the Stellosphere, which is a rainbow river. Miles thanks M.E.R.C. for waking him up and calls him the best friend ever. Just then, Stella informs them of an approaching Tomorrowland mail shuttle, and Miles hopes it has the Booster Bites he ordered for M.E.R.C., who gets so excited, that he accidentally burns part of the wall. Miles then calls the I.O.T.A. to clean it up before leaving.
In the hangar, Miles and M.E.R.C. meet Mr. Xylon, who gives M.E.R.C. the pack of Booster Bites. As M.E.R.C. tries to open it, the Callisto family arrives at the hangar to meet Mr. Xylon, who informs them of a special delivery package from Tomorrowland. He enlarges it with the Matter-Sizer before leaving. Leo then opens the package, and finds out that there is another robot there. Miles wonders if M.E.R.C. has an assistant when Leo powers it on. The robot reveals himself to be Axel, the Callistos' replacement robot. This confuses the Callistos, especially Loretta and Miles, who does not believe that Axel is better than M.E.R.C. when Axel consumes the Booster Bites, much to the dismay of M.E.R.C. Phoebe then decides to have a face-to-face-to-face with Admirals Watson and Crick to clear it up.
There, Admiral Watson reveals that they sent the Callistos a replacement robot because Axel is the latest in Tomorrowland technology, and orders them to begin using him immediately. When questioned about if M.E.R.C. can still be kept, the Admirals say no, and suggest the Callistos drop him off at the Tethoscape the next day so that they can find a new family for him. Afterwards, the transmission ends. Phoebe concludes that it does not matter what they want if the Tomorrowland Transit Authority believes Axel will perform better on missions. Axel then requires a briefing on the Callistos' next mission. Phoebe explains that the mission is to check the climate on Planet Escalus to ensure it is safe for space travelers, and the TTA will build a new Starship Repair Center there if it is. Axel will patrol the Stellosphere until they get there. After Miles motivates M.E.R.C. that he should not be replaced, M.E.R.C. is tasked by Leo to load the weather station into the Star Jetter.
M.E.R.C. has no luck lifting it off the ground, and Axel manages to complete the task efficiently, much to the dismay of Miles and M.E.R.C. Leo then asks Miles to check with Loretta for jobs M.E.R.C. can do. In the living room, Loretta is busy studying an ancient builder's carving when Miles and M.E.R.C. exit the Multivator and accidentally break it. Miles is about to fix it when Axel does the job himself. Afterwards, Miles contacts Phoebe about what other job M.E.R.C. can do, and Phoebe tells Miles about space barnicles needing scraping off the front windows. M.E.R.C. fails at that job, as well, and Axel does the job efficiently. The Callistos then board the Star Jetter to set up the weather station.
M.E.R.C. then mocks Axel about who is better when Miles motivates him again. After the Star Jetter lands on Planet Escalus, Leo and Miles see how fast Axel can set up the climate station. After Miles tells M.E.R.C. about Axel never beating M.E.R.C.'s time of seventeen minutes and nine seconds, Axel quickly sets it up, upsetting M.E.R.C. In the Star Jetter, Phoebe sees that the uplink is successful and that the climate analysis is in progress before concluding that Axel is efficient. Loretta then sees some alien carvings and goes out of the ship to study them. Meanwhile, Miles finds M.E.R.C. and tells him to not give up because if that happens, Miles will have no other friends. After the two reconcile, M.E.R.C. notices the temperature dropping, and Miles notices it too.
At that time, Loretta approaches the alien carvings and scans the symbol with her Bracelex to find out that it is a warning symbol. Meanwhile, Miles and M.E.R.C. return to the Star Jetter and tell Phoebe about the quick drop in temperature. Phoebe thanks M.E.R.C. for doing so, and notices that the nights at the planet get cold so fast that everything freezes instantly. She then notices Loretta went to the cliffs. Leo calls Loretta to head back to the ship. Moments later, Loretta loses her ride and runs back to the ship. As the Callistos are about to activate the ship, Axel informs them that due to the cold weather, rescue efforts would be too dangerous, and takes command by locking down the Star Jetter. Phoebe instructs Axel to release control of the ship, and when Axel refuses, M.E.R.C. heads out of the ship himself and catches up with Loretta just in time. However, Axel refuses to unlock the ship, stating that it would endanger the remainder of the crew. Phoebe then powers down Axel just before Miles uses his Lazerang to unlock the ship, allowing Loretta and M.E.R.C. to head inside and the Callistos to leave the planet just as it freezes. Miles then tells M.E.R.C. about knowing how to protect his family, and Loretta says that he is family.
Back in the Stellosphere's hangar, Mr. Xylon shrinks the package with Axel in it to its normal size with the Matter-Sizer to head back to Tomorrowland, per orders from Admirals Watson and Crick. Xylon then states that the Admirals sent M.E.R.C. Booster Bites as a reward for his great job. M.E.R.C. gets so excited that he messes up Loretta's hair a bit, but Loretta says that he would not change a thing about M.E.R.C., who enjoys the snack.
