"Moon Girl's Day Off" is the seventh episode of the Disney Channel and Marvel Animation series Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.

Synopsis[]

When Lunella seemingly gets hurt and is stuck in bed, Casey must step in as Moon Girl for the day.

Plot[]

Lunella continues to excel in school, fight crime, meet with people, and perform other activities, only to slowly become more and more tired. Lunella and Devil soon face off against Abyss, a fifth generational villain with the ability to make things disappear, but does not actually like the supervillain life and is pressured by her family. Despite Lunella being tired and wanting to rest, she manages to capture and defeat Abyss who vows revenge. Casey proceeds to set up the rest of Lunella's day, which mainly consists of a photo shoot, but she is too tired and fakes a twisted ankle to get out of it. Lunella rests at home and Mimi agrees to look after her.

Knowing that Casey wanted the photo shoot done, Lunella has Casey wear a modified version of her outfit and has her go in her stead. Casey is nervous, but she and Devil attend the photo shoot with little to no issues. Afterwards, Casey begins to experience all the unwanted attention and hard work that comes with being Moon Girl. Meanwhile, Lunella constantly asks for things from Mimi who immediately deduces that she has been faking her injury. Abyss returns and confronts "Moon Girl", but Devil hides her while he faces her. Casey contacts Lunella who has Mimi drive her into town. However, upon suiting up, Lunella twists her ankle for real this time.

Lunella arrives at the fight as Casey is struggling to take on Abyss. With Lunella's direction, Casey manages to get the hang of fighting and together they freeze Abyss in a block of ice. Lunella comes clean to Casey about what has happened and she forgives her, realizing that she has enough things happening already. Abyss is inspired by their friendship and escapes, but she calls her mother to tell her that she does not want to be a villain anymore and change her career path. Casey agrees to let Lunella rest further and the two of them, plus Devil, hang out while eating ice cream, though Devil ends up eating Casey's phone when she decides to briefly check it.

Trivia[]

  • Moral: You shouldn’t be afraid to tell the people who love you what you need.
  • This episode was originally scheduled for March 11, 2023, but it aired early on March 4, replacing the episode "Goodnight, Moon Girl" on Disney Channel and DisneyNOW, the latter of which has it erroneously labeled as the seventh episode. When the episode was added to Disney+, it was placed in its proper chronological order as the tenth episode.
    • Despite this, the episode was clearly meant to take place afterwards as clips from that episode are used in a flashback sequence after Mimi asks Lunella if she built a mind-reading device, which was an element from that episode.
  • While Abyss physically resembles the Ex Nihilo version of the character, her powers, abilities and backstory are completely invented for the series.
  • Jean-Michelangelo is modeled after real life photographer Annie Leibovitz.
  • During the photoshoot, Casey, as Moon Girl, and Devil Dinosaur recreate a variety of scenes that reference other movies and shows:
    • The bus stop scene from My Neighbor Totoro.
    • Casey rides Kuzco's llama form in front of a picture featuring his and Pacha's cottages from the end of The Emperor's New Groove.
    • Casey and Devil recreate the climax of Sleeping Beauty, with Devil wearing wings resembling Maleficent's dragon form.
    • They are seen performing jazz music to frogs in a New Orleans-esque boat, referencing The Princess and the Frog.
    • Devil is in a giant dog house while Casey gives him a large bone, a reference to Clifford the Big Red Dog.
  • When Mimi drives Lunella into town, she briefly recreates the famous Akira bike slide, an easter egg used frequently in animation.
  • Lunella mentions S.H.I.E.L.D. after defeating Abyss for the first time.
  • Devos the Devastator, Stiletto, Instantanegirl and a yet-to-be identified villain make cameos at the beginning of the episode.
  • Steve Loter cameos as a piano player at the end of the episode.
