The Moonlanders are characters who appear in the DuckTales reboot. They are aliens who live in the city of Tranquility in the Moon.
Background[]
The Moonlanders are aliens who live on the Moon, whom they all believe is a planet. Their culture mostly relies on them having the use of gold for everything, particularly from technology to building structures as well as clothing. Penumbra even claimed that her species had enough gold so that they put it in the waste, which ironically is made of gold.
In addition to having General Lunaris and Penumbra, the Moonlanders also consist of various other individuals with given names such as Gibbous (voiced by Rob Paulsen), Zenith (voiced by April Winchell), Palus (voiced by Laura Bailey), Mascon (voiced by Sam Riegel), and various other generic, unnamed Moonlanders. When Lunaris gave out a false speech about Della "betraying" the Moonlanders, they supported Lunaris in his plans to take over the Earth to prove that they are stronger than Earth. Ever since Louie's attempts to stop Bombie, Lunaris sent a plan to destroy Earth by sending an alien invasion. However, when Lunaris planned to destroy Earth with the surviving Moonlanders in it, they reveal that their general betrayed them as well. However, since Lunaris' defeat, the surviving Moonlanders made peace with the Earthlings.
Role in the series[]
Two individual Moonlanders, Lunaris and Penumbra, first appeared in the episode "What Ever Happened to Della Duck?!". Throughout the episode, Della encounters them hunting down a massive Moon Mite; however, she later finds an offspring of a Moon Mite and having calmed it down, Della was able to bring peace between the Moon Mites and the Moonlanders by having the offspring reunited with its parent, causing the Moonlanders to no longer feud with the Moon Mites.
"The Golden Spear!" introduces various Moonlanders who live in a populated city made of gold known as Tranquility. Aside from including Lunaris and Penumbra, the episode introduces various Moonlanders such as Gibbous, Zenith, Palus, and several other generic Moonlanders who support Della during her plans to leave the Moon. After her rocket is built, Della sets off to leave for Earth while the Moonlanders watch Della leave. However, after Lunaris injured himself, he gives out a false speech that Della betrayed all the Moonlanders, saying all of her stories were an act of deception, calling Della the "first wave" of invasion from Earth and would scurry home to tell Earth they are weak. Lunaris then says he and his people would not wait for attack, so with the Spear of Selene's manual he will prepare a fleet of rockets and declare all-out war on Earth. As a result, this leads the Moonlanders to form an angry mob as part of Lunaris' plans to invade Earth with the war underway, as the Moonlander general vows to prove the Moon is the "Greatest Planet in the Universe". Penumbra is now concerned that war between Moonlanders and Earthlings will soon break out. During a private conversation with Lunaris at the chambers, Penumbra suspects a setup as Lunaris brought Della and her ship to their city and she gained their trust, which Lunaris then replies that with the other Moonlanders not being warriors like they are, he needed to give them mutiny as a reason to fight, much to Penumbra's worry.
In "Nothing Can Stop Della Duck!", Gibbous and Zenith encounter Donald Duck who finds himself on the Moon. Lunaris suddenly approaches Donald, holding him captive.
In "What Ever Happened to Donald Duck?!", Lunaris approaches a group of Moonlanders, telling them that he recently discovered Donald Duck who is accused for spying on the Moon (also calling him a minion of Della Duck to which he calls both of them traitors) showing him in front of the mob. Not understanding what Donald is saying, Lunaris misinterprets Donald, telling the aliens that Donald wants to bring death to the aliens of the Moon. Lunaris then mutes Donald putting a golden strap on him to keep him from shouting, explaining that capturing Donald is the reason why the Moonlanders must strike first as the aliens continue to declare war on Earth and protect the Moon; Penumbra is then given a badge as the champion for defending the Moon from Earthlings as the aliens cheers for Penumbra's victory to which Penumbra explains that this is actually a lie as Donald did not intentionally attack the aliens. With Donald being held captive, he manages to escape the Moon without getting caught by the guards and ends up escaping the Moon via golden cannon, evading Lunaris.
The Moonlanders later take part during battle in the Season 2 finale, "Moonvasion!". They arrive at Earth and arm themselves with blasters attacking the surviving Earthlings, leading Scrooge McDuck to find various allies to recruit in a plan to fight against Lunaris and his army. As the Moonlanders attack everyone on Earth, Scrooge and various allies fight against Lunaris during the invasion. However, when Lunaris threatens to destroy the Earth, still with the Moonlanders on it, the other Moonlanders are horrified to realize they were aiding a ruthless monster willing to sacrifice their lives. With Lunaris defeated after Selene tells him that he is the Earth's newest Moon, the Moonlanders suddenly make peace with the Earthlings.
By the events of "They Put a Moonlander on the Earth!", Gibbous and Zenith adapt their lives on Earth while Webby and Dewey attempt to help Penumbra adjust her life on Earth ever since Lunaris' defeat which she becomes used to adapting her life on Earth throughout the episode.
Penumbra is the only Moonlander who returns in the series finale "The Last Adventure!" where she is revealed to be one of the many adventurers, or adventure related people, to have been captured by F.O.W.L. for eradication. Fortunately, she is freed throughout the end of the episode with many other victims.
