Mrs. Jumbo is a character featured in Disney's 2019 remake of Dumbo. She is the loving, protective mother of the remake's titular character.

She is based on the character of the same name from the original 1941 animated film.

Role in the film[]

Mrs. Jumbo is first seen in her enclosure where Max Medici was the one who purchased her from Hans Brugelbecker at Biloxi, explaining to Holt Farrier that he saw something amazing in the elephant's eyes, which Max explains to Holt that she is pregnant. She later appears inside a cargo standing by herself where a stork flies past her just before he flies off with a flock of storks just before she goes back to sleep.

The next day, Mrs. Jumbo is seen being commanded by an abusive animal handler named "Rufus Sorghum" with the other elephants exiting while Holt Farrier warns him take it easy on her. Milly then realizes that Mrs. Jumbo is struggling to leave while a Rufus cruelly lowers a ramp for Mrs. Jumbo to back down just before Holt punches Rufus, just as Mrs. Jumbo is surrounded by animal handlers. It is then revealed that Mrs. Jumbo recently gave birth to a baby elephant named "Baby Jumbo", whom Max thinks he would help contribute to his circus if successful. Later that night, Mrs. Jumbo gives a rattle to her son just before she and her son are brought to the circus by Holt.

During circus performance, Mrs. Jumbo is one of the elephants arriving inside the circus, alongside her son Baby Jumbo. Later, after Dumbo accidentally sneezes to cause the "Dear Baby Jumbo" sign to be broken with the letters jumbled as "Ear Baby Dumbo", the crowd makes fun of Dumbo by calling him a fake elephant, while Rufus approaches Mrs. Jumbo, telling her who would help her now if the crowd is making fun of her son Dumbo. Upon hearing the commotion, Mrs. Jumbo defends her son from the crowd while Holt commands her to calm down, which she listens to his command. However, Rufus, Mrs. Jumbo's abusive handler, arrives at the circus ring where he heard the commotion and confronts Mrs. Jumbo for being a mad elephant, which Holt defends Mrs. Jumbo and her son from the abusive handler. This, however, made Mrs. Jumbo angry and go on a rampage, destroying the tent (also causing Rufus to be killed by a falling support); she is then dubbed a mad elephant and put in solitary confinement. Dumbo reunites with her while Miss Atlantis sings "Baby Mine" nearby. The next day, Medici sells her back to her original owner, Han Brugelbecker, hoping to get some return on his investment. However, he is only able to sell her back for half price, leading him to make Dumbo a clown so that he has something to do.

After Medici's circus was a success with Dumbo during his clown act and it moves to an amusement park called "Dreamland", Mrs. Jumbo later appears elsewhere in an attraction called "Nightmare Island" where she is housed as one of the most dangerous creatures and called "Kali the Destroyer". When Dumbo flies out of the circus and enters the attraction to reunite with her, the guards take him away as the park owner V.A. Vandevere believes that Dumbo meeting her could be a distraction and threat to him. Throughout a series of events, Vandevere declines Milly's request to bring Dumbo back to his mother as he explains that Dumbo will do whatever, telling Holt and his children to accept this decision, much to his greed.

The following day, Sotheby explains to the circus troupe that he resigned his position as he heard Vandevere give the order, to which he explains to Holt and the rest of the troupe that Mrs. Jumbo will be gone without a guarantee of surviving, much to Holt, his children, and the other performers losing faith in themselves. As a result, Holt, his two children, and the performers decide to help free Mrs. Jumbo and reunite her with her son.

At the Colosseum, the show begins to start while the truck driver asks the engineer to open the gate to release Mrs. Jumbo from Nightmare Island to which he agrees while telling a fellow employee to unlock the back gates. As the truck arrives at Nightmare Island to rescue Mrs. Jumbo, Colette meanwhile prepares Holt to rehearse albeit with only one hand left. Meanwhile at Nightmare Island, Miss Atlantis tricks a pair of guards as the performers barge in using their circus act abilities to help rescue Mrs. Jumbo. Back at the Colosseum, Colette begins her act again with Dumbo as Neils Skellig confronts Max Medici about what happened to Mrs. Jumbo as Vandevere tells Max to come with him, much to his worry. He later confronts Holt's children to know where Mrs. Jumbo is, as he attempts to arrest them; Holt catches him with his rope and ties him up on the horse to which the horse Holt was riding on escapes, leaving Neils defeated as the circus is set on fire. Fortunately, Mrs. Jumbo and her son arrive at the seaport, just as the ship sends them to the jungles of India.

In the aftermath after Max's circus introduced a no-animal policy for his circus, Dumbo and his mother eventually ended up in a secluded elephant sanctuary where they are able to roam freely and live among dozens of other elephants.

Trivia[]

  • The stork perched on the cargo where Mrs. Jumbo was present at night where Dumbo was born was none other than Mr. Stork as evidenced in the Blu-ray and Digital bonus feature "Easter Eggs on Parade".
  • During the part where Mrs. Jumbo was exhibited the Nightmare Island attraction, she was cruelly nicknamed "Kali the Destroyer" after the Hindu Goddess of Death, given her species' country origin and the fact that her actions in the ring led to the unintentional death of her abusive handler.
