Mrs. Nightshade is a very complex woman. While she loves her son Jim and cares for him greatly, she is implied to be depressed due to the absence of her husband. She seems to at least do well for herself, but at the same time, appears to be weak willed. She longs for her husband and was willing to answer to Mr. Dark's claim that he had her husband, but was briskly rescued by Charles Halloway who was able to let her see reason.
Trivia[]
In the book, it is explained that Mrs. Nightshade had two other children who passed away through unknown means, explaining her attachment to Jim. The movie implies that her husband walked out on her and Jim, while the book implies that he died. Her role in the book is actually quite minor compared to the movie.
