"My Cousin Izzy" is the seventh episode of the first season of the ABC comedy-musical Galavant.
Synopsis[]
Thinking about being in a relationship, Isabella wants Galavant to try to impress her parents with attentive small talk, but he's confident that breaking everyone out of prison will impress them and save them from certain death. Galavant gets his opportunity for a hero moment when King Richard challenges his brother to a duel and needs a champion to fight for him.
Plot[]
In flashback, a young Galavant is taught by his father Arnold that in order for him to be a great knight, he must shut off all emotions and "never get married". In the present, Galavant thinks up of a plan to have everyone escape. Isabella's parents, who think that Galavant is pompous, reveal to Isabella that they have already sent a carrier pigeon to her much younger cousin, and fiancé, Prince Harry to come and rescue them. All prisoners are brought to the throne room where Kingsley challenges Richard to a duel. Richard cowardly offers to pick champions with Kingsley quickly picking Gareth and Richard forced to choose Galavant.
Richard is conflicted over the matter as if Gareth wins, Kingsley becomes the new king, but should he lose, he will die. By fate, Harry arrives with his army to confront Richard. Instead, he uses it as an opportunity to have a "pre-duel" feast to welcome their guests, frustrating Galavant who has been looking for his time to shine. Sid, Steve and the King and Queen of Valencia, who are still in the dungeon, believe that Galavant has already been killed. Steve uses his misdirection skills to free them from prison while the guards are all distracted by the feast. They use the King and Queen's knowledge of the castle to make their way up.
Meanwhile, Chef, whose real name is revealed to be Vincenzo, tries to get back with Gwynne, but she believes that it is their destiny to die in sad and pathetic ways due to their upbringings. They finally conclude that the only way out of their sad and miserable lives is to poison all the royals attending the banquet, believing that either way, they will be glad to have accomplished something. During the feast, Madalena begins to mock Galavant over his typical wordless brooding hero behavior. At this moment, he comes to the realization that his father was wrong about how heroes should act and that he should confess his feelings to Isabella.
Vincenzo chickens out at the last minute and instead of poisoning the royals, he serves them all what they are allergic to, though Gwynne admits that her last moments with him will be the happiest. Sid, Steve and the King and Queen arrive with Sid returning Galavant's sword. He finally confesses his feelings to Isabella (while also finishing a song that he was continuously being interrupted from), as Harry decides to return home out of annoyance. With Gareth's push, Richard stands up for himself by defending Vincenzo from Kingsley and decides to do the duel himself. However, Kingsley insists that Gareth still represent him, much to Richard's displeasure.
