But I don't wanna never see you again.
―Natalie to Pete.

Natalie Magary is a major character in the 2016 remake Pete's Dragon. She is the 12-year-old daughter of the Millhaven's mill owner known as Jack, who befriends Pete and later meets his dragon friend Elliott.

Background[]

Personality[]

Natalie is a kind-hearted, empathetic, and compassionate girl. She quickly shows compassion towards Pete, a mysterious child living alone in the forest. She tries to understand his story rather than judging him. She believes that imaginary friends can be fun and can be there for someone when they feel truly lonely. Not one to be easily scared, Natalie doesn't hesitate to venture into the woods, climb trees, or follow Pete, even if it puts her in danger. Unlike Grace and Conrad, she had the courage to approach Elliott and even pet him, which helped her understand the dragon's gentle nature. She embodies the spirit of exploration and discovery. Curious and intelligent. She asks questions, observes carefully, and helps the adults unravel the mystery surrounding Pete and Elliott. Once she understands the truth about Elliott, she supports Pete and does everything she can to protect the dragon when her uncle Gavin plans to use it for his own glory. She also apologized to Pete for what happened to Elliott, assuring him that Grace never intended for it to happen.

Natalie quickly became Pete's second best friend, after Elliott, because of her calm and understanding approach to dealing with the wild child, helping him adjust to life at home, and also enjoying his amusing antics during this adjustment period. She didn't think Pete had invented Elliott as an imaginary friend, as she initially asked him if the dragon was indeed an imaginary friend. Shortly after Pete said he wanted to leave and go far away with Elliot after his capture, Natalie told him she didn't want him to go, as she had grown attached to him despite the short time they had known each other. When Pete returned after running away with Elliott, Natalie was happy to see him, which showed how much she cared for him. Ultimately, their brother-sister-like relationship became even stronger once Pete officially became Natalie's adopted brother.

Physical appearance[]

Natalie is a young pre-teen, of average height and slender build with a slim and agile physique, although slightly taller and a bit more muscular than Pete. She has brown hair, of medium length, which she often wears loose or with slight waves. She has large, expressive eyes, blue in color. Her complexion is fair, with a youthful glow typical of a healthy child. She wears simple and practical clothing, often in earthy or pastel colors, as seen at the beginning of the film where she wears a yellow t-shirt with salopette and denim overalls. In the evening, she wears a beige nightgown with patterns of plants and trees on it. Later, she wore a turquoise blue t-shirt, navy blue trousers, and a dark green wool sweater. At the end of the film, she wears a light blue jacket and fuchsia trousers.

Role in the film[]

Natalie is first seen wandering away from her father's pickup truck while Pete stares at her gazing the trees at the forest and she wanders across the clearing, she chases across Pete across the forest. Seeing Pete on a tree, a thoughtful Natalie climbs the tree Pete is on to which as she falls, Pete tries to rescue her, but the branch snaps. Upon seeing Natalie who fell down, with a foot injury and Pete playfully messing with the girl's hair, she goes into a conversation with Pete who introduces himself to Natalie who also introduces herself to the boy just as Natalie hears her father calling her. As Jack, Grace, and a group of rangers approach her, she tells them that she was following Pete only for Pete to go after Elliott.

Later at the hospital, Natalie recovered from her injury just as her stepmother Grace decides to take her back home safely but later finds out that Pete is gone while seeking for Elliott. Later, she and her stepmother enter the car where Pete is at as Grace drives the two home. At home, Natalie teaches Pete the right way of eating a sandwich while her father Jack discusses with Grace about finding a plan where Pete belongs to. Later that night, Pete asks Natalie about Elliott to which Natalie doesn't know to which Pete shows her a drawing of a dragon to which the drawing reminds Natalie of a ballad her father used to sing to her. After singing the song, she tells Pete that dragons live towards the north, or towards the North Star. Grace then entered the room and told Natalie that she hadn't heard the ballad in a long time before asking her to leave her alone with Pete for a while. She later listens to Jack telling Pete's favorite story at night.

The next day, Natalie arrives in the woods to search for Elliott, along with Conrad Meacham, Grace, and Pete. Pete brings Elliot out of his cave showing Conrad's family as they gaze upon the dragon in curiosity. The moment, however, is interrupted when Elliott was struck by a tranquilizer dart fired by Gavin, much to the Meacham family and Natalie attempting to stop Gavin and his group of dragon hunters from hurting Elliott.

Arriving at the sawmill, Natalie hears Elliott's loud bellow in the warehouse. Jack asks her to stay in the office with Pete for now, and Natalie then asks him what will happen to Elliott, to which Jack has no answer. As Pete becomes increasingly worried about Elliott, Natalie explains to him that the workers just want to understand where the dragon came from, which leads Pete to say that he would like to leave and go far away with Elliott, never to see anyone again. Natalie then admits that she doesn't want Pete to leave. The two children then left the office and took advantage of the adults' inattention to sneak into the warehouse where Elliott is at through a skylight.

Pete and Natalie arrive at the warehouse in a plan to rescue Elliott much to a large crowd outside barging in only to find out that Elliott turned himself invisible to confuse the crowd. Natalie tries to start the vehicle where Elliott is lying, but has difficulty doing so. Just then, Conrad arrives and offers to help the children get Elliott out. The four friends find themselves speeding down the road, pursued by Gavin who wants to get his hands on the dragon. They force Gavin's pickup truck off the road onto a bridge, damaging their own truck in the process, and prompting Elliott to unleash a burst of flames onto the bridge to force their pursuers to retreat. Unfortunately, the fire damages the bridge so badly that it collapses, narrowly missing Grace and Jack as they fall. Fortunately after surviving the chase, Natalie, Grace, and Jack happily reunite with each other after Elliott saved them from the burning bridge. Natalie and her family then sadly watched Pete being carried away on Elliott's back.

As evening fell, Natalie was in her father's arms, exhausted from the events of the day. Suddenly, Elliott and Pete returned, much to the delight of Natalie and Grace. Natalie then watched Elliott and Pete say their goodbyes, with Elliott departing to return to his own kind.

During the epilogue taking place a few years later, Natalie joins with Pete, Jack, and Grace seeing Elliott fly with a flock of dragons in the sky in rejoice.

Trivia[]

  • Natalie is a character created for the remake as she's not based off any original character from the original film. In the original film, Pete never formed any kind of relationship with any children of his own age.
  • She is one year older than Peter.
  • Natalie had the same book as Pete, "Elliot Gets Lost", when she was younger. She received it when she was learning to read.
  • She taught Pete how to use a vinyl player.
  • In her house, there is a wooden beam marked with Natalie's height measurements over the years. She uses this in the film to help determine Pete's age.
  • Oona Laurence, the actress who played Natalie, managed to get the role because she had good chemistry with Oakes Fegley, the actor who played Pete. Oona also became friends with Oakes during filming, partly because she didn't have many friends of her own age at that time.
  • Originally, in the chase scene on top of the tree, Natalie and Pete were supposed to interact before the fall, with Pete introducing himself and Natalie asking him if he lived in the area.
