“Have you ever wondered how nature gets its glow? Who gives it light and color as the seasons come and go? Who helps all creatures Great and small to walk? To swim? To fly? Who crafts such tiny details? You might see them if you try. For it's all the work of fairies, but they stay well out of sight. For the first time that baby laughs, a fairy's life takes flight.”
The average Never fairy stands at five inches tall (12.7 cm). Fairies can appear to be of any ethnicity in both the movies and books, although they usually have button noses and slanted eyes. In the films, however, it appears that some features and talents may be more likely to go together: for example, all ice-talent fairies tend to have either white or black hair, and many light-talent fairies have dark hair and skin. Each fairy's wing design is unique, there are no two that are exactly the same, with the exception of twins born of the same laugh (following the events of Secret of the Wings). Fairy speaking is difficult for humans to understand; to them, all fairies sound like the jingling of bells, but a select few are able to process what fairies are saying, such as Peter Pan and Captain Hook. According to In the Realm of the Never Fairies: The Secret World of Pixie Hollow, fairies smell like cinnamon and they depend on the belief of children on the Mainland to exist. A fading fairy can be saved if other children clap to show that they believe.
Never Fairies have unique sayings in their language such as "Fly with you", a typical greeting, or "I'd fly backwards if I could", an apology.
In the movies, fairies receive their pixie dust from the Pixie Dust Tree while in the books, fairies get their pixie dust from Mother Dove by grinding her magical feathers that she sheds each year during The Molt. The fairies depend on her for guidance but so does all of Neverland; as long her egg stays well and whole, no creature in Neverland will ever grow old.
Each fairy has a talent - that is, a skill (whether magic or mundane) that he or she is born with the ability and knowledge to perform. Never fairies use their talents to contribute to their communal society in both continuities, and in the movies, bring seasons to the Mainland.
