Marvel's New Warriors, or simply New Warriors, is a cancelled television series that would have starred the Marvel superhero team of the same name. It was intended to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and would have aired on Freeform. While a pilot episode was filmed, which received positive word of mouth, Freeform dropped the show and it was shopped around to numerous networks. The show was ultimately cancelled by Marvel and Disney.
"Marvel’s New Warriors" is about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world… Even if the world isn’t ready. Not quite super, not yet heroes, “Marvel’s New Warriors” is about that time in your life when you first enter adulthood and feel like you can do everything and nothing at once — except in this world, bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.[1]
Karey Burke, of Freeform's Programming and Development, said “Freeform’s mission is to deliver incredible content to young adults and Marvel Television seamlessly aligns with that mission–we couldn’t be more proud to collaborate with them on ‘Marvel’s New Warriors'".[5]
"'Marvel’s New Warriors’ have always been fan favorites and now particularly with the addition of Squirrel Girl, they are Marvel Television favorites as well,” said Marvel’s Head of Television and Executive Producer Jeph Loeb. “After the amazing experience we’ve had with Freeform on ‘Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger' we can’t think of a better place for our young heroes."[5]
In 2017, the show was no longer to air on Freeform, and was being shopped around. After two years without a network, the show was officially dropped by Marvel and Disney.[6]
Casting[]
The cast for the main protagonists of the New Warriors series was revealed on July 10, 2017. On the casting, Executive Producer and Showrunner of the Freeform series Kevin Biegel said “I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It’ll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them."[2]
Executive Producer Jeph Loeb said "We’re so lucky to have assembled such a diverse and incredibly talented cast, we can’t wait for the fans to see what’s in store when we unleash these iconic characters into the world!”[2]
Freeform's senior Vice President of Casting and Talent Elizabeth Boykewich also added "At Freeform, we are committed to finding distinct and entertaining characters that our audience can enjoy and relate to,” and that “We are excited to be working with Marvel Television to bring these fiercely average superheroes to life and watch them take on the world.”[2]
