Norman Osborn was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
Background[]
Norman Osborn is a billionaire who founded Oscorp and met an unnamed woman, who he had a son with, named Harry Osborn.
Role in the series[]
Season one[]
Norman Osborn meets Peter Parker at the end of the first episode and gives him an internship at Oscorp. In the second episode, Osborn finds footage of Peter in the elevator and realises he is Spider-Man. Peter tries to tell Norman that he isn't Spider-Man but it doesn't work and Norman says he wants to assist Parker. Although reluctant at first, Peter agrees and Norman tries creating new suits for Peter as Spider-Man, but they make it harder for him to be himself until Osborn makes him a white and blue suit, which Peter loves. Norman is in his office with his son Harry when Peter accidentally reveals his secret identity. Norman insists that Peter and Harry work together when it comes to crime fighting in case Norman isn't available to help Peter. Although not too happy about it, Peter and Harry get along and Norman is reported in on anything that has been happening.
In "Duel With the Devil", Norman is trying to find a way to locate Doctor Otto Octavius as Osborn believes he is causing a lot of trouble with his job. Norman tasks Peter, who is having a night off from heroisum, to go to a secure building, where he confronts Daredevil. Then in "Scorpion Rising", Osborn continues his research on Octavius while Peter learns of the Scorpion visiting the 110 hideout, where Lonnie, Pearl and others are located. The hideout is ambushed by Scorpion, who kills one of the members so Spider-Man intervenes, while Osborn watches on. However, Parker runs out of web fluid and is severely injured after being impaled by Scorpion's tail. Osborn sends one of his gliders to rescue Parker, which takes him to the medical centre in Oscorp Industries, where he recovers.
In "Tangled Web", Norman sits by Parker while he is being seen by doctors who are able to save his life. As Peter recovers, Norman assures the young hero that no one saw his face and his identity is still intact. Peter worries what May might think as he did not return home the night before, to which Norman assures him that he got Harry to let May know that Peter stayed the night at his house. Peter is determined to find Otto despite his injuries, but Norman stops him as he needs rest, so contacts Thaddeus Ross, who contacts the army. When that doesn't work, he, with Osborn's permission, sends in Iron Man who arrests Octavius.
In "Hero or Menace", Norman visits Octavius in prison and is working on his own inventions. Then in the season finale, "If This Be My Destiny...", Norman is revealed to have relocated the lab for the Oscorp interns, where Doctor Strange accuses Osborn that he is the one causing chaos in the cosmos and Osborn realises it was Strange's doing that caused the attack and devastation on Midtown High a year earlier. Spider-Man gears up and Osborn, knowing his identity asks him to be careful before leaving. After Doctor Strange and Spider-Man defeat Venom, Osborn returns to the site and notices some of the Venom symbiote left behind.
Trivia[]
- This variant of Norman Osborn and his son Harry are black skinned, while in other media - in other shows and movies - they are both white skinned. This decision was most likely influenced by the fact that the rather unusual artistic choice of the Osborns' hairstyle, which had long been established back in 1965, had been interpreted by many as resembling waves, a hairstyle that is commonly seen among the African-American community.
- Norman's voice actor, Colman Domingo, has expressed interest in portraying the live action version of the character, in the main MCU universe.[1]
