- “Remember when we all finally came up to Headquarters? Yeah, those were the days.”
- ―Nostalgia arriving at Emotion Headquarters[src]
Nostalgia is a minor character in Disney•Pixar's 2024 animated feature film Inside Out 2. She is one of the new emotions and the tenth inside of Riley Andersen's mind. Apparently, she is not needed yet (like Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui weren't in the first film) and still, according to Anxiety, Riley has 10 years, two graduations, and a best friend's wedding until she is needed.
Background[]
Official Description[]
- Nostalgia is the oldest emotion in Riley's head, despite the fact that she appears shortly after the new ones arrive. She reminisces about the days when she, along with Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, finally came up to Headquarters. Of course, that happened 30 seconds ago. In fact, she may have arrived prematurely, as Anxiety says Nostalgia still has ten years, two graduations, and a best friend's wedding until they need her. But she assures the eldest emotion that she will keep her in the loop.
Personality[]
As her name implies, Nostalgia is the literal embodiment of a sentimental longing for the past, often for a time or place with happy personal associations. She is extremely sweet and always fondly remembers past memories, even when they have happened recently. She has a habit of popping up at random instances, mostly to remind the Emotions of events that happened recently, such as reminiscing when she and the new Emotions came up to Headquarters 30 seconds ago and reminiscing on past instances with Bree and Grace, only to be told to return downstairs since it's not her time yet, but has stated she will always be downstairs if they need her.
Physical appearance[]
Nostalgia in Riley's mind represents as an elderly lady with a gray colored tone and brown clothes. She has taupe colored wrinkled skin and sepia, curly hair. She wears a brown dress with a green and pink plaid shawl as well as dark red plaid slippers. She also wears white and pink gradient rimmed glasses with pink lenses.
Appearances[]
Inside Out 2[]
Nostalgia appears shortly after Anxiety and the new Emotions arrive at Headquarters, remembering when they arrived at Headquarters, to which Ennui tells her that it happened 30 seconds ago. Then, Anxiety reminds her that she can't come yet, since she is still several years away from being needed, but she assures the older emotion that she will keep her informed.
Later, she appears again remembering this time the past instances that Riley had with Bree and Grace, but the Emotions tell her not to hurry and to return downstairs since it is not her time yet, but Nostalgia declares to them that she will always be downstairs if they need her.
Trivia[]
- Along with being the oldest of the emotions in general as previously stated, Nostalgia is the oldest of the emotions appearance wise.
- Her elderly appearance represents how when one experiences nostalgia, it makes them feel old.
- The color of Nostalgia's glasses are rose, symbolizing the term "rose-tinted glasses", which means remembering something as being better than it actually was.
- The brown color used to represent Nostalgia is a reference to sepia toning, which places a warmer tone on images in order to better preserve their contents.
- Nostalgia only appears twice in Inside Out 2, the least out of all of Riley’s emotions, and as such does not appear in most posters or advertisements for the film.
- The fact Nostalgia keeps popping up at HQ would be the likely answer to why the other emotions besides Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are not seen on adults, with them only appearing when they are necessary, making the core 5 "primary" emotions, and the new emotions "secondary" emotions. This is further proved by Riley's mother's counterpart of Anxiety coming out from behind a curtain.
- This also ties back into the original concept of the first movie, where there was a total of 27 emotions residing with in Riley's head, and the vast majority residing in the back until called up when needed.
- Nostalgia is the only new emotion introduced whose name does not begin with a vowel letter.
- Nostalgia, along with Envy and Embarrassment, are the only emotions whose colors are not any of the rainbow.
- Among them, though, Nostalgia has the most neutral color (as Envy's stands between green and blue, whereas Embarrassment's lies somewhere between red and purple).
- Nostalgia is the only emotion who is never seen inserting any commands in the console in the film.
