The Old Cataract Hotel, also known as the Sofitel Legend Old Cataract Aswan Hotel, is a historic British colonial-era 5-star luxury resort hotel located on the banks of the River Nile in Aswan, Egypt. It was built in 1899 by Thomas Cook and opened under the name Cataract Hotel. The hotel has hosted numerous famous guests, including Tsar Nicholas II, Winston Churchill, Howard Carter, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana, and Agatha Christie, who wrote the novel "Death on the Nile" while staying at this hotel.
Appearance[]
In the 2022 film Death on the Nile directed by Kenneth Branagh, the Old Cataract Hotel is featured prominently. However, instead of filming at the actual location in Aswan, the production team recreated the hotel at Longcross Studios. They made a replica based on visuals captured during their trip to the actual Aswan's luxurious hotel. The hotel's appearance in the film is majestic and grand, reflecting its old-world glamour and rich cultural heritage. The production team built the lobby, halls, balcony, patio, and jetty all according to plans based on a visit to the real thing. They used an amalgamation of various styles of architecture from Egypt in the 1930s.
