Olga Seminoff is a Russian-born housemaid who works for Rowena Drake, a former opera singer and the owner of a decaying palazzo in Venice. She is one of the attendees of a Halloween party and a séance that take place at the Palazzo, where retired detective Hercule Poirot is invited by his friend, mystery writer Ariadne Oliver. During the séance, led by medium Joyce Reynolds, it is revealed that Rowena's daughter Alicia was murdered a year ago, contrary to the official verdict of suicide. Shortly after, Joyce is also killed, and Poirot begins to investigate the case.
Olga is initially suspected of being involved in the murders, as she is accused of forging a will that leaves her the palazzo after Rowena's death. She also has a mysterious past, having escaped from a Soviet prison camp and changed her identity several times. However, Poirot later discovers that Olga is actually innocent and that she was framed by the real killer, who turns out to be Rowena herself. Rowena had killed Alicia because she was jealous of her relationship with Maxime Gerard, a French diplomat who was also Rowena's lover. She had also killed Joyce because she knew too much about Alicia's death. Rowena had planned to kill Olga as well and make it look like she had fled after being exposed as a forger.
Poirot manages to save Olga from Rowena's attempt to drown her in a well, where he also finds the body of another victim, Dr. Leslie Ferrier, a doctor who had helped Rowena cover up Alicia's murder. Poirot confronts Rowena with the evidence and forces her to confess. He then arranges for Olga to inherit the palazzo legally, as he believes she deserves it for her loyalty and suffering. He also helps her reunite with her long-lost brother, who had been looking for her since they were separated in Russia.
