"One Dance" was written by Chris Martin for the album, Little Mermaid and Friends. It is not, as some believe, a deleted song from Disney's 1989 animated feature film, The Little Mermaid.
Background[]
This song was written as a bonus track for "The Little Mermaid Greatest Hits." Its placement lead a few to speculate that it was a deleted song. But it was not. Deleted songs appear on the album "The Music Behind the Magic" in their demo forms.
Cancellation[]
It was never intended to be any part of the original film or any follow up project despite a few internet rumors. The idea that it was is easily cut by the fact that the writer is Chris Martin and the original score was written by the Academy-Award winning composer Alan Menken and the late lyricist Howard Ashman. Furthermore, the song did not appear on "The Music Behind the Magic" compilation, which was bursting with deleted songs from various Ashman/Menken projects, but had very few for the film.
Finally, the idea that some have speculated that this song was to be an "inner voice" is deleted by the song's own lyrics which include "I would change who I am, leave the sea for the sand..." She would have not been singing about how she "would" do this if she already had.
Lyrics[]
There is music in the air, can you hear it?
It's in two, no, maybe three or maybe four
And I see me dressed in white
With two feet that feel so light
It's as though they've never ever touched the floor
One dance, just you and me
Beneath the moon, beside the sea
One dance and it's happily ever after
One dance and you will see
We're not so different, you and me
Just us two, me and you
One dance
There are stars that fill the night, can you see them?
There are two, or three or gee, a million more
And I see you in their light
Who, me? A dance? All right.
Just to move and glide with you across the floor
One dance, just you and me
Beneath the moon, beside the sea
One dance and it's happily ever after
One dance and you will see
We're not so different, you and me
Just us two, me and you
I would change who I am
Leave the sea for the sand
Just to stand with you
I would leap at the chance
For a glimpse of a glance
Of one dance with you
One dance, just you and me
Beneath the moon, beside the sea
One dance and it's happily ever after
One dance and you will see
We're not so different,
You and me
Just us two,
Dream come true
One Dance
One Dance
One dance
One dance
