Otto's Sisters are characters from the 1933 Silly Symphony short Birds in the Spring. They are two robin hatchlings who were born with their brother Otto during springtime.

Background[]

Otto's two sisters are two identical diminutive robin hatchlings whom their mother gave birth to, along with their brother Otto. Compared to their brother Otto, his two sisters have a red coloration located on their head between their eyes as well as being located on their neck as well as a light brown ruffle on their torso resembling their mother's plumage. Unlike their brother Otto who is shown to be carefree when running away from home, they are often shown to be obedient with their parents in following their orders as in singing perfectly during a singing lesson or sticking together with their father during a flying lesson.

Appearances[]

Birds in the Spring[]

Otto and his two sisters are seen hatching from their eggs during springtime, as their parents feel happy that their children are born. Otto's father tells the other birds (including an owl) to look at their adorable children, as they gather around to witness their birth. Sometime later, Otto and his sisters started growing plumage. As they sing together, Otto's father conducts his children while Otto's mother happily enjoys their singing. While Otto's sisters sing normally, Otto sings off-key, frustrating his father. During a singing lesson, Otto gets distracted when he sees a bee nearby, just as he swallows it; Otto returns to the nest where his sisters are singing, which they become surprised when they heard a buzzing noise after Otto consumed the bee, as well as upsetting his father.

After a singing lesson, Otto's father teaches his son how to fly like him and after a lesson, he teaches them how to fly and as they fly independently, Otto's parents are excited to see their children fly for the first time, only for them to fall. Otto's parents use a nest to protect their children from falling, except for Otto who lands on a patch of mushrooms. Otto's sisters feel worried that their brother is not home, along with their mother just as the father tries to get his son's attention.

Later when a group of hornets begin chasing Otto, his parents and sisters feel sad that they could not find him, but they notice him being chased by hornets as Otto's father comes to the rescue and saves his son. All of a sudden, Otto's sisters and the rest of their family hide under their nest to avoid getting stung. Otto's sisters, mother, and father are safe after the hornets pass by, but his father becomes very upset without him, furious with him for wandering too far away from his family as well as teaching him a lesson.

Other appearances[]

Archived footage from Birds in the Spring was used in the song "Let's All Sing Like the Birdies Sing" in the Disney's Sing-Along Songs volume Fun with Music.

Trivia[]

  • Due to the short itself lacking any dialogue, neither Otto's name was mentioned, nor the names of his sisters. Nevertheless, Otto's two siblings were later confirmed to be sisters in the model sheet for Birds in the Spring.[1]
